SMC got pounded in the first set but came back to tie it 1-1. Gritty play by SMC to fight off set a couple of set points. Go Gaels. Utah has been shooting themselves in the foot in sets 2 and 3 with horrible passing and unforced hitting errors. I am very disappointed to not see Sarah Chase playing for the Gaels. She played both front row and back row for the Canadian National Team this past summer, and I thought she would be having a stellar senior season after being plagued by injuries throughout her career. But apparently she is not able to play. Also, I am surprised by the Gaels not using Bible as libero, as I think she has fantastic reflexes and a lot of experience indoor and in the sand. They are going with the younger Knudsen sister at L. Saint Mary's is running a 6-2 today with Jr. Alexsa Parker and Fr. Alosina Thompson. Soph Jennifer Laird and Jr Alex O'Sullivan are MB's, Sr Lindsey Calvin and Fr Breyan Ashley are the Oppo's and Sr Lindsey Knudsen and Jr Siena Young at OH. Fr Kelsey Knudsen at L. 3rd set now 18-16 Utah...SMC is keeping it close.

I must be very slow this year. Just noticed that St. Mary's roster is missing Senior Opp Payton Rund, in addition to apparently not having Sr OH Sarah Chase available to play. Does anyone know what happened to Rund? Didn't see her appear on the transfer/no longer playing thread. Great beach player for SMC.
SMC has been hanging tough against Utah...though now at 22-24 in the fourth set and about to lose 1-3 to Utah.

St Mary's knocks off #19 Utah in 5 sets!
SMC middles started very slow but did well in the later sets. Lindsey Knudsen was key with 11 kills, 1 error. Great way to turn around their disastrous first match of the season. Lots of freshmen players getting good experience (setter, Opp, libero). I would love to hear what has happened to Payton Rund and Sarah Chase. They and Lindsey Knudsen were the core senior group I was counting on for a breakthrough year for SMC.

BYU is a mess in their first set against Duke (second match). Down 11-23 at the moment. Yikes. Terrible serve receive and lots of out of system swings and errors. Lyndie Haddock-Eppich was pulled for Kiani Moea'i. Stetler and Robinson in front row. And Duke is up 24-15 now.
Duke takes set one 25-16.
Jones-Perry and Gneiting both hitting negative in first set.

BYU regrouped to take set 2 25-19. Tied at 1-1 going into the break. McKenna Miller with some nice kills down the stretch. RJP not on the court. RJP and Gneiting still negative for the match.
Meanwhile, Pacific is coming back to tie UT-Arlington at 2-2 and push that match to 5.

BYU starting set 3 with Miller, Robinson and Stetler at the pins. Duke out to an early 5-3 lead....now tied at 6.
Gonzaga should be starting their first match of the season at UCLA on the UCLA Live stream which is notoriously bad quality from the Wooden Center.
Santa Clara just started match against Grand Canyon.
Pacific in set 5 against UT Arlington.

Pacific pulled out a 16-14 fifth set win over UT Arlington. Lines and Patterson had 18 kills each. The team hit .154 for the match. Gonzaga is tied at 1-1 with UCLA after losing set one 25-18 and taking set two 25-21!! Live stats: stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=228633 Stream: pac-12.com/live/ucla-2BYU is at 24- 22 in set 3 against Duke at the moment, still playing without RJP. Madi Robinson just scored a huge kill from opposite to take the third set and go up 2-1.

Madi Robinson has been a revelation for BYU, going 11/0/17 at opposite. Stetler has been solid in the back row to go with 8 kills, hitting .375. RJP has not re-entered the match. I can't imagine the pressure of being the leading returning point scorer/kill leader in the NCAA. But I expect she will shortly be back to form. Kennedy Eschenberg has also shown a huge improvement over last season, scoring very well for BYU.
BYU takes set four 25-17 and the match 3-1 over Duke. Duke has benefitted greatly by the addition of setter/opp Andie Shelton, who transferred from Pacific.
Meanwhile, Gonzaga dropped set 3 to UCLA 20-25 and is at 4-3 in the fourth set. It's a nice start for them in their first match of the season with a relatively young team.
Santa Clara won set one and dropped set two to Grand Canyon.

I must be very slow this year. Just noticed that St. Mary's roster is missing Senior Opp Payton Rund, in addition to apparently not having Sr OH Sarah Chase available to play. Does anyone know what happened to Rund? I have been informed that Saint Mary's Rund graduated early and is spending her final year of eligibility playing beach for Florida State. Gonzaga gave a good fight to UCLA in round one of their matchups, ultimately falling 1-3. Set scores were 18-25. 25-21, 20-25, 22-25. Gonzaga is apparently running a 5-1 with setter Jenna Kuehn this season. Penner was the kill leader with 14 kills, hitting .243. As a team they hit .193 for the match. Round 2 against UCLA is tomorrow. Santa Clara is up 2-1 over Grand Canyon after taking set three 25-17.

Pepperdine was swept by a ranked Pitt team, -23, -20, -13. Pepp hit .183 for the match, to Pitt's .364. Ahrens (.381) and Scully (.132) led with 11 kills each. Frohling had 8.

I really expected Madi Robinson to start at opposite last night after last week's match. She's the same height as Lacy Haddock but more agile and has a quicker arm swing which seems to work better with what BYU is trying to run there. I thought Haddock was fairly solid though. She's been playing out of position at opposite for three years off and on, and I love how hard she works at it, but it's not easy for her because she's not quite quick enough either with her whole body movement or her arm swing.
Robinson is able to adjust better to poor sets, but Haddock is still the better blocker, so they lose a bit with that. However, Robinson is very mentally strong from what I've seen in her high school days and is used to hitting against tall blockers. She led her team to the state championship last year over Heather Gneiting's team, and I was more impressed with her than Gneiting in that match. She is a shrewd player who learns quickly on the go. I thought there would be more chatter about her in the preseason, but she was hardly mentioned at all. It's a nice start for her. It'd be great if she can keep it up.
RJP struggling and being pulled is a good thing in the sense that BYU knows they can win without having to rely on her so much. Plus, I got to see 6th-Man Stetler at it again. Of course it helped that McKenna Miller had two strong matches after playing so poorly last week. I saw more variety in her shots today than I've seen in some time. She actually hit some line shots for once. She even passed okay. Hopefully, she stays at this level and doen't have so many ups and downs as she did last year.
It was nice to see them running that middle attack in transition and mixing the slides in better. Haddock-Eppich has not been really sharp yet, but she does have the ability to work her way into better play in most matches, which she did again today.
This team feels very different from last year's team, even though they essentially only lost one starter in Cosy Burnett. They don't play like a #8 team so far, but I'm quite intrigued to see how the newcomers fit in with the veterans as the season progresses.
