Here is Kyra's press release if you missed it. hawaiiathletics.com/news/2019/1/8/womens-volleyball-rainbow-wahine-volleyball-adds-transfer-to-2019-roster.aspxYes..there was a debate on whether she was on scholarship but as Hawaiianstunner stated if the school put out a press release, that means that player is on scholarship. UH don't release press release for walk ons. Also...Kyra will not only start because she is on scholarship but her play against Texas was pretty good. She deserves to start off that performance. Okino could come out of nowhere and take the job away but I don't think she is all that great a passer. Okino is a fairly good digger but an average passer IMHO.

Can we take a quick moment to recognize this playing career? So excited to see her influence grow and develop this program. www.teamusa.org/usa-volleyball/athletes/Robyn-AhMowSantosGetting in new Recruits is always an exciting aspect of the season but I think more than anything, I’m excited for Robin’s statement as the head of this program with majority recruits that are there because they specifically wanted to play for her. Remember no female coach has lead an NCAA D1 to win it all but I think Hawaii Women’s program has one who could take them there. Not necessarily saying it will be with this class, but I definitely think these girls are in great hands. Some of the greatest “hands” in history actually 😉

I always felt a solid junior/senior transfer outside with Div I was the last piece to really elevate this team.
I actually still think that Libero/DS are our potental weak spots.

I think we'll be fine with Hanawahine. She only didn't play a lot at Oregon because she was behind really amazing liberos. She's no Akiu, but she'll probably be similar to Kahakai. Both of our outsides will likely play all the way around. If we run a 6-2, we won't need a DS other than for the ocassional MB serving sub. Just over 2 months away and we'll find out!
I also can't wait until practices start. Maybe Cindy can give us an idea of who's looking really good.

I agree. I'm sure Hanawahine is decent, but she was at the bottom of the depth chart at Oregon and played 10 sets last year. For her to get a scholarship and start tells how little confidence the coaches have in the returning Liberos.

I think Akiu and the defensive specialists did a pretty decent job this season. I would say blocking and digging are complementary skills, and if you look at Hawaii blockers, the only presence we really had was Burns at 6'5". We had Castillo (6'3") who was inconsistent and didn't see much playing time. The rest of our blockers were Granato (6'), Liva (6'), Iosia (5'11"), Gaskin (6'1"). Many opposing impact players who tower over our block really used their height to their advantage, giving more spaces for the L & DS's to cover.

Tying this in w/ vbsam16's promoting of Hanawahine: constantly seeking upgrades for a position (Libero); while having a serviceable one ( If fully recovered from an injury); are Not mutually exclusive. The best (and pretty much sole) L for UO this past season, Brooke Nuneviller, was an AVCA HM All-American. She will probably switch to OH2 this coming season. Therefore -- short of a stud recruit coming in (I don't follow Duck vb enough to know) -- whoever succeeds her will give more of a perspective on where Kyra Would Have compared w/ someone ahead of her on that depth chart. I used to play...injuries take a cumulative toll! See wha' happens.

Anyone know the reason why were going on the road for once. I mean it's refreshing to see but were only playing two matches so I question what they are going to do especially rams, can she visit recruits during the season? I do hope so as I'd love to get a Texas pipeline going on asap

Of course playing in Baylor will be like playing in the Stanley, I hope the girls won't be able to tell the difference..lol

I mean would you rather challenge a team like Baylor (who is good for our schedule) or a no name team willing to come to the islands?

And also I have always thought that a quality win on the road is always better than at home RPI/SOS-wise. Also good for the athletes too that they get to travel anywhere than CA.

I’m just happy they’re going to be playing in Texas. I live in Austin, so the last time I saw the team live was when they were sent to A&M for the post season.
