Problem is that UCLA can’t keep some of the Elite or even mid tier local talent home. It’s been a long trend that the Elite talent from SoCal go to Stanford, SC or some Big10 schools. Also the emergence of top local players going Beach ONLY. UCLA Beach has two players on the roster who were both highly recruited indoors in Sparks and Van Winkle. Regarding diversity as it pertains to the volleyball team. Yes I’d like to see it, but recruits also need to WANT to go there. Otherwise it really doesn’t matter. UCLA is currently recruiting two players of color (big recruits) from the LA county area.....Let’s see if they can land them. No shade to BEACH, Joy is killing the SoCal recruiting game. But when you think of the schools UCLA is on another level of education. When you have Starr Williams, Mia Tuiniga and other top recruits committing to LB it does make you scratch your head... UCLA needs to be landing these types of players. Never understood why UCLA recruits so much away from home. There is no way Sealy really knows these kids from the Midwest or understands their strengths and weaknesses. Most Socal kids dream of going to UCLA. Not sure how you can bomb when you have that yard to recruit from.

Plus, I think kids nowadays are less likely to want to stay close to home than in the past. If you want to compete for a national championship, you have to recruit nationally.

Joy and Matt of Long Beach are the biggest supporters of diversity in volleyball, I hear their club is amazing, and no surprise that she is killing the recruiting game. UCLA volleyball is NOT DIVERSE while the rest of the Pac12 is, let's see what Brad Keller can do. U Brad Keller is an amazing recruiter, but they are consistent at recruiting girls out of San Diego

Do they get a slight break (slightly lower test scores and grades than general student body) or a BIG break? If the former, then they will lose out because of competition from other top tier schools and the magnetic personality of their head coach.

Regarding diversity as it pertains to the volleyball team. Yes I’d like to see it, but recruits also need to WANT to go there. Gotta feel the love from the players and coaches. Recruits pick up on vibes during the recruitment process. How welcoming is everyone? Are there others that look like me or understand me or where I come from? I don’t know. Southern California volleyball in general is tough when it comes to seeing diversity. Big differences when you look at SoCal clubs vs clubs like TAV or A5.

Stanford had two non-white/Asian players on their team. I think Utah had three non-white players. Washington had two non-white players. Cal had two non-white players. Like I said before, this isn't just a UCLA thing. It's a volleyball thing in general.

Big differences when you look at SoCal clubs vs clubs like TAV or A5. well how much has to do with the local economy? First and foremost, it's more expensive in many southern california locales than the DFW or Atlanta metroplexes, so household income doesn't go as far. On paper there may be a lot of diversity in Southern California, but that isn't the metric you should be looking at. The question is how well minorities are doing economically. You are probably going to find FAR more well to do minority families (those that can afford to put their kids in these clubs) in Atlanta or Dallas per capita than you are in Los Angeles.

I can agree with that. And I think the sport would be even better with more diversity, if more girls of color had access to the sport. To be honest the difference in athleticism with let’s say a TStreet vs an A5 is pretty obvious. But first they need access. Basketball it’s not an issue because I believe most of the fees and dues are paid via sponsors.

Tstreet I think focuses on how to play the game. Sure there's technique, but it's in the context of the flow of the game, how to swing the best swings to score, the best blocking moves, etc. They're big on rhythm. But yes, they don't tend to have the kinds of athletes A5 does, at the high end.

(Devon Chang is a stud btw) When you look at the type of players BEACH is landing with the LOCAL LA/OC kids it’s a head scratcher as to why UCLA can’t pull some of these athletes. Yes UCLA needs to recruit nationally, as does everyone else. BUT when you have a backyard full and ripe for the picking you stay there and pick the yard....
