Yes. (Im not sure how that works with the NCAA, she might not have a professional contract?). Cal has a commitment from a setter from the top Swiss team. This seems kinda of like cheating. I understand these players are good young players, but I think if you are trying to protect Amateurism in collegiate sports, you don't allow foreigners who play on professional teams. I remember you and UW fans having very different views on this, back when the rules were different to make it actually against the rules.

Right so how are you playing for a professional team if you don’t have a professional contract? In this particular case, her club has a relationship with the Romanian volleyball federation. Their best youth prospects join the club through an "Academy Project" Ok, so, again, this just kind of sounds like cheating. This is akin to the NFL, through a “relationship with the state of Texas” allowing teams to have high school seniors on their roster, letting them play a season in the NFL, and the next year that same player be eligible to play college. Would we all be ok with that? If it smells like a professional athlete it shouldn’t matter what the contract says.

What is it do you recall I said?

Unlike the american system, they're not limiting the potential of their players.

In that hypothetical NFL scenario (which is ridiculous, since no NFL team would ever have a high schooler on its roster), I imagine the athlete would still be eligible if he wasn't paid. Heck, Chris Weinke was a pro baseball player before playing football at Florida State. It didn't affect his eligibility.

I don't see an issue with it. They seek a path in which they'll get a highly valued education and are using their skill set to pay for it, exactly like their future teammates.

To me if they aren’t paid they aren’t pro. I believe the NCAA feels if they play with pros, they’re pros. Or that’s what it used to be at least.

It can't be that way anymore (I mean they gave Vrankovic eligibility and Magda played with her old team in the Czech Republic this past winter break to get ready for the spring season)

It was changed about a dozen years ago. There was a time when merely playing on a pro team rendered one ineligible (or in theory at least. The NCAA was still its mercurial self in granting WTF-level exceptions counter to their own rules - most notably with Tomasevic, Jerkov, and Cutura). That changed to the current rules, where someone is only ineligible if they are paid in excess of living expenses. Vrankovic is still a SMDH moment for me.
