Lost the fourth 21-25. Díaz did not look good as the DS and Atherton struggled a lot. No fifth set. Heels win 3–1.
In other news, Leath and Macadoo were in the crowd today.

And Atherton just couldn’t connect with anyone almost all day. We were down 6 late in the set and then Archer came in and we took a lead... but eventually lost the set.

We still have some areas to work on, but I am very happy with most of the things I saw.
Wurl is going to be big for us as will Archer....she needs to be setter in a 5-1. Held her own at the net. Cox and Howard looked good and Austin looked great.
I will try to give a write up later, but we have so much potential, esp when we get Harrison back in.

Quick thoughts: All the middles contributed, I think Howard with most kills but Esterley not far behind and probably highest hitting percentage. Talked with one of the coaches afterward and Harrison will be fine.
Austin is a very smart attacker. Very smooth and refined for her age.

Watching the game today was the complete opposite of watching our games last year (apart from Diaz struggling in a last set after the game was already decided). It was refreshing! It looks like the starting lineup will be Archer, Howard, Austin, Cox, Esterley, Wurl and Fradenburg with Harrison as the second outside. The way it was setup today, it looks to me that Harrison will fill the spot where Wine was at (glad to hear from charger0304 mention coaches saying she'll be fine)... which is great because that is when Archer is in the front row. That is also when Howard is in the front row. So, we should have two very terminal hitters during those rotations. Also, Greer came on to serve for Howard while Fradenburg served for Esterley. Archer is running away with the setter position in my opinion. I truly don't feel like it's close. Atherton looked pretty bad today. I do not know if it's a little mental at this point as well, losing that spot, but I'm happy the coaches are playing the setter who is the best right now. Austin has grown a lot even in a week. She was solid and had some really good kills today. She's going to be very, very good! Mia looked good today too... her and Wurl together could be good! It was good to see Peck in there. She is going to be quite a good little player. I think people will come around on her. Ari came on before Clark did but I think it was more because she used to play at Coastal. I still think the depth chart at middle is Howard, Clark, Esterley and Tontai although Esterley is getting the nod. Wine will be a great player off the bench when someone is struggling. She'll get some time this year for sure.

Was writing this while the above posts happened...
So... those of you that were there, did it seem Archer was winning the job in a 5-1 offense or solidifying that the Heels will run a 5-2? Didn't hear Clark's name... how did she play? Did Wurl wear the L jersey at all? Did Moseman get run? Based on today... when things go live on Friday vs. Minny what do you think the lineup will look like?

Fascinsting stat: according to CCU, the first 3 sets, we hit .304 to CCU hitting .204.
HI do feel like Peck could be a factor in the mix. She is a good player and is going to keep growing. Hope Clark gets reps to....
Heard Lauren may be held out of practice first part of week to prep for end of week.

I would agree that Archer looked better than Atherton-- something about the tempo. Atherton seems to set either very slow or very fast, but it feels like a musician playing individual notes instead of phrases. Archer can vary tempo, but the relative smoothness comes from the fact that she seems to have a clear pulse that the hitters can follow. The other contributing factor is that Archer doesn't attack as much. Atherton is very good at going over on 2, but there's always a cost. A lot of it was that last year, there was no consistent right side or middle attack, because the passing didn't allow for it. Atherton was sort of forced into attacking a lot and may need to get used to focusing on running the offense instead of being the offense.
My worry is that Archer's lack of size may be an issue in the front row in a 5-1. The 6-2 still seems to be a work in progress, though the set they lost wasn't so much the 6-2 as the fact that Coastal got a lot of mileage serving line on the right side. It wasn't just Diaz who had trouble. Parker also struggled with it (fwiw, I thought she otherwise looked very good).
It's very hard to gauge progress, because Coastal basically looked like a team that last year's UNC team could beat, though they didn't always do that. I didn't think Coastal's setter was very accurate or deceptive, so UNC's defense looked improved, but I don't know if it really was. The weak point last year was UNC's near total inability to defend the slide. Coastal wasn't running a slide, so there was no way to tell if the Heels fixed that issue. Minnesota had great success with it last year and I suspect will be running it a lot, though they'll be working in a new setter who may not execute it as well as SSS could.
From what I saw, my other worry with the defense would be the blocking. Like last year, UNC got a fair number of blocks, but there were way too many swings that went through the block untouched. There were even triple blocks where the hitter went straight through it.
UNC was obviously experimenting with different looks and Harrison, the team's likely go to hitter, didn't play. Both of those things further masked how things might look.
I thought Parker, Howard, and Archer all looked promising. Fradenburg also seemed pretty solid and her setting on second touches has clearly improved. It wasn't a match where there were a lot of "how the heck did she do that" moments for the back row.
my questions: 1. a lot is going to depend on Harrison and Parker. You never know until they play in actual matches. 2. setter and system? Right now, Atherton just doesn't look like a fab 50 recruit in her 4th year of college volleyball. My personal take is that teams are only as good as their setting will let them be. 3. back row looks better, but front row defense is still a big question mark (blocking and out of system balls) 4. I didn't see a lot of signs of emotional leadership on the floor. While there was a fair amount of hand slapping on the sideline, Diaz was struggling some (likely nerves) and I didn't notice anyone coming over to her to help settle her down (I may have missed it). I would want someone or someones to step forward a bit more. Some slippage is natural in a situation like the fourth set yesterday, but I didn't see anyone stepping up and letting teammates know, "this is unacceptable." Even when Carolina closed the gap and took a brief lead, a lot of it was due to Coastal mistakes (missed serve, making contact with balls that were clearly out, etc.) rather than elevated play on the Heels part.

Lot of good observations. I agree Archer and her size can be an issue but I thought she held her own pretty well yesterday.
I also think UNC has really upped their service game. They kept CCU OOS a good amount IMO.
The defense is better this year. Blocking still needs some tuning, back serve recieve and back row are much better w Mia and Wurl. Austin is also a stabilizer.
I feel like team chemistry was much stronger when Archer was on as well as Cox. Harrison not playing also impacted it. When howard, cox, and harrison are all 3 on the court, it is a completly different feel.
I am optimistic that we will compete w much stronget teams this year.
