I agree with a lot of outofsystem1 observation and questions.
I also think that watching the Blue and White scrimmage vs the CCU match was an eye opener and I think that the team played to their competition. There were some better vball moments during the B&W scrimmage than the last match against CCU IMO. Some of it was due to missing Lauren I am sure, but also not playing as intense as when you are up against a team that could mop the floor with you if your not careful, many athletes compete best under pressure and in match situations. There was some nerves and the blocking was not really tested against a very โshotty and tippyโ team. I feel like the blocking will actually better reveal itself when someone really swings at them- like they did against each other in the B&W scrimmage.

A few more thoughts:
They changed the benches to the other side of Carmichael!
It looked like Atherton is staying on the floor to serve. Both setters looked good and improved from last year...hard to tell because passing seemed to take a dip when Atherton started setting.
Fradenburg and Wurl look like they play well together in the back row. All the DSs got time, and a few had some nice service runs.

I thought that Archer was more of a spark plug and leader than Atheron, thus the passing was stronger. I really like the tandem of Wurl and Fradenburg. They are strong back row anchors.
At this point, i am most concerned of we use Archer in a 5 1 if she can consistently get good block touches or if she would be a liability.
I think this team has grown so much and that our new pins and Cox moving to the OPP are going to be realllyyyyy good improvements.

re a small setter in a 5-1: if your setter can't block, you're fine. If your setter can't set, you have problems.
Nobody pays their setter to block.

Id much rather have Archer who can set and is natural at it. However, there is no dispute that a good left side should be able to crush line or tool a setter that cannot defend. Its just a factor to think about and how you set your defense up. If I had to choose a pure and consistent setter it would def be Archer. Archer has a great connection with everyone. Cox even looks better w her this year. I think she could really make sure all the big guns are used the way they should be.

They may not pay a setter to block, but power 5 coaches generally don't recruit setters for a 5-1 who aren't at least 5'9" and touch 9'3" There was a stretch when Curry had to set a 5-1 because of the injury to Schnabel. Curry did very well there as the staff did a variety of things to cover it up, but it did get figured out by the end of the season.

And if you cant block, you need to at least get good defensive touches. That year, UNC had all the pieces to go deep into the tourney, but once teams targeted the weak point, scouting became easier and teams exploited it. Archer is 5' 8" according to the roster.this is why I thought they would run a 5-2 but with Atherton not setting well, its a toss up situation. I thought setting was where we would have the least question marks...

I love Belle and how she fires a ball out there, she is a good jumper and gets up there. I guess if she plays front row we get Destiny a catchers mask during practice and turn her into a defensive god. ๐๐

I also loved when Belle got he kill a the net against the CCU defender. I think w more reps, she could gain some blocking technique. If they use Belle in a 5-1, they def will have to work on solid defense. I like her pace setting for sure and consistency. BTW I am fairly sure Harrison is back practicing today, may be limited til end of the week though for precaution.

She is fun to watch!

Released earlier, UNC is going up against the projected winner of the B1G (Wisconsin) and the 3rd place picked team (Minny).
Way to open the weekend at home.

I hope UNC can make it competitive and/or possibly even mess around and steal one. If not, I'm not sure how much longer either team would want to play us. Hopefully the team remembers how they nearly pushed it to five sets against Minny last year. Also, does anyone know how the participants for the challenge are selected each year? It seems like the last few years it has always been UNC and either Florida State or Louisville vs Minny and Wisconsin.

I like UNC's athletes match up well with each counterpart against UW and Minny....other than Retke, she is in a class of her own. But its how all thsoe aprts mesh as a team. I hope UNC also makes it competitive and shows they want to return to the spotlight. Not sure how they are chosen. FSU replaced UL. However, I am alarmed that the ACC Network and ACCC Network Extra are not working on the ESPN app....which means since it is on ACC network extra, the match might not be viewed by anyone other than Youtube TV users.

I'm not surprised ACC Network and ACC Network Extra don't work on the ESPN app. It seems with the addition of more and more sport networks that I have to keep opening up new accounts just to watch a match or two at a time. I kind of wish they could go back to streaming on GoHeels.com.
