I don’t think Syd is a lock, I didn’t watch her during the spring, I don’t doubt her talent but she’s very up and down mentally. We've all seen the potential. She has had some excellent individual matches (15K in 3 sets vs. MSU in '17; 21K @ Iowa in '18) and has had the heaviest arm on the team since she was a freshman. But we've also seen her struggle, especially against the top teams in the B1G. She has had a rocky ride on and off the court in A2 and I'm really rooting for her to put it all together for her senior season.

Really impressive 10-0-12 (.883) stat line in a huge match against Purdue last season too. She'll see a huge increase in swings out on the left pin this season.

The 2019 roster was updated today, minus the incoming freshmen so far. Of notable absence is Jacqueline DiSanto, who was rumored to have been not returning to the team this season. Uncertain as to whether she is transferring elsewhere or stepping away from the sport. She gave us a huge highlight in 2018 going on a service run that flipped the match at Wisconsin. Wishing her well on her next chapter.

Let's go Blue! That's not a flattering photo of the court floor.

Not 2019 specific, but I like what Rosen has done in recruiting lately. Michigan is setting themselves up to be formidable in the conference and postseason. Robinson, Mruzik, Johnson, and Boney, are all likely top 10 senior aces (obviously Robinson is since she's in the '19 class and was ranked #8). Having at least four top 10 senior aces on the roster in 2021 bodes well. It doesn't hurt that Legacy is cranking out some ballers right now, but they still get credit for keeping them at home.

The return of Michigan Volleyball PR guru Katie Gwinn Hewitt from maternity leave means the radio silence is over as we head into the 2019 season. It's our first Rosen Report in a while; Mark touches on the B1G Japan Tour, summer camp and the roster changeover. Of particular note is his confidence in Wetterstrom and Welsh as senior leaders and his high expectations for freshmen Pertofsky and Robinson. Maybe the biggest news is that hopes for a new arena sound officially shelved: "...the idea is that we want to continue to grow the program into more matches at Crisler and ultimately probably play there full time."

A permanent move to the Crisler Center, which seats nearly 13,800, would be massive for the program. Cliff Keen Arena barely squeezes in 2,000 as it stands now - definitely more of a wrestling arena.

Rosen sounded pretty iffy on Cori Crocker during the Rosen Report. Sounds like that M2 position is totally up for grabs. Thinking it'll come down to Crocker, Bair, and Robinson.

If they’re going to play in crisler they should at least get a taraflex floor or something.

Not really news, but Amber Beals and Maddie Dowd were officially announced as part of the incoming freshman class yesterday. The roster has now been updated with all of the freshmen; photo shoot forthcoming. Jenni Liu, the German setter rumored to have had a serious look by the program apparently didn't make the cut. Beals is an intriguing story. Columbus native and daughter of Ohio State baseball head coach Greg Beals, her decision to come to Ann Arbor could not have been an easy one. She will be competing for a spot as a defensive specialist and future libero on a team that needs as much ball control help as it can get. Dowd's role will primarily be as a backup setter, a role she filled on the powerhouse Legacy club team that she played on with two other recruits (Robinson and Mruzik). She and Rocafort will back up Welsh this season; and will likely have the same role when Scottee Johnson arrives in 2020. We are four short weeks away - Go Blue!

2019 captains announced today: Brooks, Welsh and Smith. Ellie Brooks has been a leader off the bench since her freshman season, happy to see her get this recognition. MacKenzi Welsh will serve as floor captain, an easy pick as she hardly ever leaves the court. Natalie Smith is a bit of a surprise; she is going to have a ton of pressure this season in her new role as libero. She is a hard worker and I think Rosen hopes to see that work effort rub off on some of his younger players. Go Blue!

Three great selections. I think there’s an argument to be made for Wetterstrom given her leadership roles off the court and the fact that she’ll play a key role in the offense, but Brooks and Smith are solid picks too.
