Rainy conditions outside, late week 2 hour game time change, and no pep band in the house- still a decent crowd though braving the elements to take in some B1G volleyball. Go Illini! We met a couple groups trying to enter the building as we were leaving. Not everyone got the word on the change in start time. Were you at the match? We had a terrible time trying to get to the Ubben lot from the west. I swear that they had every road that we tried to use blocked off. Apparently some sort of band function. We arrived after the national anthem. Others in our section dribbled in over the first set. Team looked good. Especially like the play of Kuper. Serving was on point tonight for everyone. Yes, I was at the game last night, too. I got my shoes soaked walking and took a bus partway so I was able to avoid those road closures. I did see that Peabody and Kirby were closed between First and Fourth and had meant to post that on VT- then I got to Huff and got caught up watching pregame and forgot. Looking at the stats from last night, JQ took 37 swings and Beth had 35- good to see that distribution of sets, maybe save Quade's arm a bit. She had 13 kills hitting .324. Glad they earned the sweep at home last night after having some tough road losses. Friday will be another test when Michigan comes to Huff- I've seen a few of their games and they've got a lot of weapons along with a good senior setter. Don't miss this one- it should be some exciting volleyball!

Where are all the ILLINI fans? Last year tons of fan input and action, the year not so much.. Are they 10-9 now? It does help to have a winning record. Guess I was a bit bored on a slower Monday at work. With Illinois coming off that brutal road stretch, I started wondering about the other ranked Big 10 team schedules, since we know it is not a balanced schedule. Looking at matches we play against the other 5 conference teams ranked in ten Top 25 (arguably the hardest conference games), we play a total of 7. Home & Away vs MN and PSU, only home vs NE, and only away vs WI and PU. 3 home and 4 road. Of those 7, we have already played 6, including all 4 road matches. So only 1 match left against top teams, and it is at home. Conparing it to the other 5 teams, all have either 7 or 8 matches against the other top schools. Most still have 3 or 4 of these matches left. PSU has 5 left. Most of these guys have the hardest part of their schedule ahead of them. And none of the other top schools have three matches in a row against this group, let alone all three on the road. So it was definitely a loaded front half to the conference schedule for Illinois.

I hope to never again see at Huff Hall the down official of Illini vs Ohio State match. Also, the line judges need review of responsibilities and appropriate positioning during play. With this set of officials & line judges at Huff Hall, I dread matches against Michigan and Penn State. (Although watching coach Rose chew out the down official would be awesome.) Officiating can be difficult, however be competent if you accept the responsibility. Appeared coaches Carlston and Tamas were frustrated with the down official (who appeared to be resentful of any discussion/questioning). Volleyball officials have extremely thin skin compared to officials in other sports. Could you imagine how a volleyball official would react to a typical B1G basketball coach shouting in their ear during play? I'm not suggesting that volleyball needs those kinds of coaches on the sidelines, but learning to ignore coaches rather than pulling a yellow card would probably be a good thing.

I'm not suggesting that volleyball needs those kinds of coaches on the sidelines, but learning to ignore coaches rather than pulling a yellow card would probably be a good thing. Most fans do not know neither the previous history nor the rules of volleyball. As Mintonette, volleyball was considered to be a gentleman’s sport like tennis. This is still reflected in the current rules with coaches & players not allowed to protest/complain about judgement calls. Basketball & volleyball are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes down to coaches behavior as basketball officials have acclimated themselves to listening to coaches while most experienced volleyball coaches know that nearly all referees will not change a call unless there is doubt in their mind (or a CRS review). CRS has eased (for the most part) tensions between the coaches and referees in getting the correct call. BTW, a yellow card is merely a warning. If a volleyball coach acted like a B1G basketball coach with profanity, he would start with a red card (point for the opponents). Anymore continuing rude conduct gets a red & yellow DQ with a possible fine and sitting out a match. That sort of behavior is simply not tolerated in volleyball. Keylor Chan got a red card for merely aggressively stepping onto the court during a match at IL awhile back. If Rose ever chewed out an official, it would be warranted as he used to also be a highly regarded VB official. Coaches like Carlson who let their emotions/temper get them in trouble with the officials, I consider to be inexperienced in dealing with them. Tamas got lured into that gamesmanship trap by Carlson in thinking that if Carlson got anything from the officiating, then Tamas wanted that too.

I have 2 seatback 2nd row seats for the Michigan’s that I can’t use. Anyone able to use them? PM me your address and I will mail them . I’m in Chicago with iffy mail service plus snow coming, so can’t guarantee that Friday’s will arrive in time, but they may. 😊 edited:Free

Alright Illini faithful, I'm officially worried about our post-season chances after that UMich loss. Our defense is honestly the worst I have seen in a decade, our offense is so predictable, and we are still making unforced errors at momentum-killing times. I'm at a loss with this team.

Our block disappeared tonight. Our serve disappeared tonight. Michigan is a heck of a good serving team.

They just aren't very good. Lose to every good team they play. The teams 3rd best win is against OSU yikes. I'm still not sold on Collins and would like to see Rylee again.

The matches at Michigan and against Penn St. will be huge. This team desperately needs a quality win and if they are 12-12 with just Rutgers, Maryland, tOSU and Northwestersx2 left on the schedule......the committee could easily go for a mid-major with some quality wins instead.

I don't think the sky is falling. Michigan was the superior team last night. And, last night's match shows they have a lot of talent that is going to be there for them after this season. Illinois needs an infusion of talent. That takes time, and patience by the Illini faithful.

Illinois has plenty of firepower. Any team that can go 5 against Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Penn State (and Washington and Marquette) has enough talent. Their problem is consistency. They make errors in every category: serving, hitting, passing, and at the worst possible times, sometimes in bunches. They're running out of time to figure out which combination of players can keep enough firepower while cutting down significantly on the errors.

Will a loss against Illinois be considered a bad loss going into tournament?

Its not my fault your inexperienced coaching staff got schooled by the Rosens.
