It's tough for Purdue fans right now because Purdue is young, so they show these great flashes, and everyone gets excited and expects those flashes to last longer. They just don't. Yet.

After watching yesterday’s match against Illinois, what does Purdue fans think of this years team? I thought that when Purdue was beat by Wisconsin and Minnesota, that they were just the better teams and that Purdue would be able to beat the teams ranked underneath them. I thought that Purdue would be more likely to win against Northwestern and Illinois. They looked good against Northwestern. They wanted to win and didn’t play scared. Purdue also had a healthy Blake Mohler. But against Illinois, Purdue didn’t look comfortable and was hard to watch for two sets. Bush looked overwhelmed and gassed from running from one end of the floor to the other. Purdue also didn’t play Mohler past the middle of the first set. She was still with the team, but was sitting with an iPad in her hand for the rest of the match. I am hoping that Purdue had a better chance if Mohler played the whole match. What did people think of Ellis/Chinn sharing playing time? Is it better to have one player play the whole match or do people agree with playing both and seeing who is better at that point of the match? I am just asking a lot of questions now because I am just frustrated as a Purdue fan. We have so much talent and amazing recruiting classes year in and year out. I want it to be our year, some day. I believe that Coach Shondell is a good coach. He can’t control how they will perform. Definitely a young team - and young teams level of play gets better as the year goes on so they do have that in their favor. Purdue's game goes as their passing goes and that is something that they need to pick up no doubt. I also feel like their serving is nowhere near as strong, especially Bush - her serves are almost ways 3pt passes. Regarding Bush - poor girl has to run EVERYWHERE - but damn, she run fast. She also has to learn placement variation on her tips - like... I know EXACTLY when she is going to tip and WHERE and other teams know it with even minimal scouting. Cleveland has emerged as the go-to for the team as well all basically expected. She's taking on more of the attack load in front and back. Her connection with Bush for her back row attacks needs work and Cleveland has to work on foot faults, but I like her progression. With the 3 freshman outsides, it appears that Ellis is becoming the choice, but obviously still learning the game in the Big Ten. Hopefully they realize how important this Wednesday game against Indiana will be and focus. Yes Indiana has been near the bottom of the Big Ten every year, but Aird has shown that he can turn programs around and this Indiana team also beat Kentucky. They absolutely need to win this rivalry game to keep Purdue as THE team in Indiana. The pool of talent is deep in Indiana, and the kids who want to stay in-state will be more difficult to recruit if Indiana shows success.

What do you mean by 3 point passes? I’m a big fan, but never played volleyball. I agree that passing is key. I have read a few times on here that Purdue’s back row is good. Were they playing well before, but have been worse in Big Ten play? I enjoyed watching Schermerhorn receiving more playing time this past weekend.
Regarding Bush - poor girl has to run EVERYWHERE - but damn, she run fast. She also has to learn placement variation on her tips - like... I know EXACTLY when she is going to tip and WHERE and other teams know it with even minimal scouting.
I did see her being denied on her tips. Is it because of her height or because she doesn’t know how to disguise it better? I wish that other people on the team could help Bush more with assisting. I know that it’s her job, but are the DSs allowed to help as well? I haven’t seen another setter move as much or as fast as Bush on opposing teams.

While listening to the Facebook press conference, Coach Shondell did say Ellis is the starter for now. He says that he still wants the other 2 to have “viable playing time” as well. I hope that they do have enough playing time that they will stay with Purdue.

Coach Shondell did say this as well during his press conference. Coach Aird is a passionate coach and I am guessing an amazing recruiter. IU will not be a guaranteed win. Purdue needs to play like they did against Northwestern. Fearless and having fun.

A three point pass is a pass to the setter that gives her 3 setting options. In other words, a perfect pass and the setter doesn't have to chase it. Then it goes down from there. So out of system there is only one setting option.
So over the course of a match, much like a hitting average, the team can have an overall passing score. Ex. 2.5.

So out of system there is only one setting option. This is a relatively antiquated explanation of the system. It's possible for a pass to be at the 3-meter line, but still allow three options for the setter (outside, right side, back row). There are also some rotations for many teams that have four possible attacking options, and others that may have only two, even in perfect pass situations. A three-point pass = a perfect pass, defined however that team defines their perfect passes.

I believe that Coach Shondell is a good coach. He can’t control how they will perform. Mohler wasn't near 100% against Illinois - her ankle got worse prior to Sunday. During warmups, she was maybe 25%, skipping pretty much everything that involved landing on that leg, and in hitting drills she wasn't getting much elevation. Shondell gave her a rotation to see if she could play on it, then replaced her with Johnson when it was clear she couldn't.
As we saw against Indiana, the ankle seemed much better. My theory with no knowledge of the injury other than what I briefly saw when it happened (how do you even get VB injury updates?) is that it needs rest after a match, and that one day isn't enough (Friday/Sunday). We should find out in the return match at Northwestern if two days is any better.
I'm fine with Shondell rotating Ellis/Chinn/Koch based on who has the hot hand, especially with Newton now being out for who knows how long. Part of it is that I assume none of the three have locked down PT, part of it is getting all of them conference experience so they'll be better prepared next season when the Boilers should be ready to make a move. (A young team with injuries to two of its four upperclass players is not going to reach their potential.)
The IU match ... ugh. Flashes of the team they could be this year, then periods of time where defense, passing and setting were all optional. Aird is getting Indiana moving in the right direction, the Monon Spike is in West Lafayette for another season but I'd expect 2020 and especially 2021 (when it's contested in Wilkinson again) to be battles. The Boilers locked down the clinching points, but that match should have gone four sets even with Newton apparently not making the trip.
With one of Mohler/Newton out, I think Purdue is a borderline NCAA team; with both out they'd miss the tournament. With them healthy, it seems like this would be another second-round out ... they have not shown the ability to get the wins they'd need to earn home court. On the other hand, if Kentucky hosts again, and/or Louisville moves up into that range, the Boilers might get another shot at either, and I'd prefer that to a match at Illinois. Not sure how good Creighton is or if the committee would send Purdue that far west.

One caveat is that I think some of those tips are forced, when the passing is such that she doesn't feel she has another option. But there are definitely some where it seems like she's showing tip and like you said, the defense is practically telling her when to do it.
I wonder if Shondell just wants the setter to be second hit no matter what. There have been a few plays where to an untrained eye like mine, it's obvious a DS could easily set rather than making Bush cross the floor and then run back to block, but they don't. If it were just one then I'd think it might be a youth issue, but even Jena seems to give way unless Hayley is the one digging it to her, so it seems more like design than happenstance.

Congrats on the upset, Boilers! Fun B1G match to watch from the outside. Glad to see that Blake Mohler is back healthy and killing it!

Hopping into this thread (because the other one is such a downer) to say WE DID IT!!!!
It feels so good to see a young Boilermakers team beat Nebraska after years and years of the Cornhuskers taking down Purdue so convincingly. It's the same with the Penn State last year -- when this team believes and follows the game plan, the results show. And what a year of blocking!
Congrats to Coach Shondell(s) and team. They've made constant adjustments this year to make Purdue a threat. The development of all the players has been a joy to watch.

I read an article by Mike Carmin in the Journal & Courier today and liked this quote:
“They don’t have any more experience than we do,” said Shondell, whose team lost to the Huskers in Lincoln 10 days ago. “The first game, (they) gave us points. Made it easy. We weren’t prepared to earn points. That was the message – we’re going to have to earn every point. From that point, we fought for every point. We competed.”
That mindset continued heading into the fifth set when the Boilermakers displayed a combination of solid passing, serving and feeding the duo of Mohler and Cuttino in the middle to take control at 7-1.
If this team believes in themselves and come to play to the potential together, they are unstoppable. I loved that I got to experience Purdue beating Nebraska at home. I doubted them when they let Nebraska come back the first set. I thought that this would be a heartbreaker. I am glad that they proved me wrong and won. Nebraska is a quality program and this will be a game to remember for this season. I can’t wait to attend the IU and Minnesota games next week.

Agree with the other thread being a total downer. I have to admit, wasn’t all that surprised by the set 1 fiasco but was impressed with how they responded. Mohler was fantastic tonight and I’m so happy to see her returning to form. If she had one more block she would have had a double double; rare for a middle blocker. My prediction is she earns B1G POW.

My prediction is she earns B1G POW. BTN put those 5 top conference MH’s on screen (Rettke, Stivrins, Hord, not sure other two) and I believe they left off Mohler. Conference has tremendous talent at that position but Mohler is an AA and as good as any of them. Purdue’s answer to Stivrins was Mohler last night. Congrats to her for a match winning performance.

Saw Purdue pound Lipscomb earlier this season and been following along. For some reason I'm a Badger fan, for the past few years, but the fact that Purdue came down close to home makes me hope they have a great season. Also, Blake Moeller crushes. The Pride of Ocean Springs!
