I was at that match. UCSB outplayed them in many aspects of game. Definitely controlled the block and the net in the games they won. Also, the UCSB libero was playing out of her mind. She was everywhere and that chase late in the 4th into the Gatorade buckets was play of the game, got the place rocking and knocked Poly out. It won't happen again when the two teams face off in SLO,...too be sure! UCSB had elder Ruddins out and younger injured, so if they are back it will be tough...but sure, it's a Cal Poly thread.

CAL POLY's loss in 4 at UCSB is a head-scratcher. All you can point to is home court advantage is bigger than one might guess. Reality: POLY needs to develop more offense from the middle. Dvoracek needs HELP!!! Big let down from McRoskey, Jackson & Mercer. You don't win matches at the D1 women's level with a middle-driven offense. You win when your leftside hitters can terminate both in-system and out-of-system. Cal-Poly's leftside hitters combined to hit 12-4-46 for a very below-average .174, and together still took 4 less swings than Dvoracek. You're not gonna beat anybody with those kinds of numbers from your outside hitters.

When Torrey Van Winden went down and Adlee Van Winden graduated it seemed CAL POLY lost that edge.

In order to have a strong middle attack you need to have solid passing to allow quality sets to the middle. When Cal Poly beat Hawaii they passed really well which allowed them to utilize the middles, which then took some pressure off the pin hitters. Against UCSB their passing was horrible. In the middle of game 3 the passing got good and the middles got fed the ball. No coincidence they won that game because of it. It doesn't matter if your middle hitter is the best middle in the world, bad passing means no sets for them (or forced sets).

Reading between the lines,...sets to the middle are predominately made by the team's setter. Correct?

Tonite CAL POLY will be playing another conference match against a team (there are six) playing for nothing more than bragging rights. And, a chance to upset a front runner in the Big West Conference.
Same is true for the other two BWC teams,...UHawai'i & UCSB.
All three teams are hoping to make it into the postseason representing the BWC.
I call these the "trap" matches. Because despite the W/L records of these opponents, they have enough offense to beat anyone on a given nite.
CAL POLY needs to bring their all-business game to beat Davis.

CAL POLY currently tied in the BWC for first place with UCSB at 8-1. However, that old nemesis,...the RPI,...has reared its ugly head once again. And, despite winning (by sweeps) both matches this past week lost two points in their RPI.

UCSB went up one to 28 and Hawai'i dropped four to 16, right on the border for hosting. If you'[re trying to figure out if they'll make the NCAAs, it's better to use RPI Futures than plain RPI.

UCSB was helped by UCLA sweeping both #2 Stanford and #15 Cal. The Gauchos swept the Bruins earlier this year.

ACTUALLY, if teams are smart about it, "that old nemesis" can be your friend for mid/low Major Conferences (which BWC is). But: they need to map out tougher OOC matches 'toot-sweet' for RPI.

Obviously,...all three teams, CAL POLY, UCSB & UHawai'i control their own destinies!!!
Which is good.

CAL POLY's 3-set win at home over CSUN pretty much as expected.
Good news POLY's kill % = +.400. Bad news 20 kills came via Maia Dvoracek kill % = .531
12 SE's with 9 SA's still not great. And, POLY will need those SA's on Sunday.
Attendance for a Tuesday nite just under 1000 fans.

Anyone who lives in the SLO area and has been to a WVB practice recdently seen Torrey there/practicing with the team?
She is always at the home matches standing with the team in warm-up gear.
