Ross/Klineman imo are going to be a shoo in. Hughes and Summer are right there with KWJ and Brooke but they need to start having better finishes in the 4+ stars. You must be referring to points, or past performance, because nobody is "right there" with KWJ/BS at this moment except maybe the ATeam... certainly not 2S. And there is the further issue of Summer's back. They haven't played to their potential in the past two tournaments, and the back may be a reason. I'm thinking you're looking at total points but they are an inaccurate measure of the standings. KWJ/Brooke have played 3 more tournaments than both Ross/klineman, and Summer/Sara. Ross/Klinamen average an incredible 160 total points MORE per tournament than KWJ and Brooke. KWJ/Brooke aveage ONLY 8 more points per tournament than Summer and Sara. All teams can only take their best 9 (or 12) tournaments. KWJ and Brooke have almost hit the mark if it is 9. Then at that point the only they can do to increase is finish better than previous results, which isn't going to be easy for them to do. Both Ross/Klineman and Summer/Sara have 3 tournaments in hand. I would expect at the current rate KWJ/Brooke may qualify (barring shoulder injury), but the only thing for sure in the current standings is Ross and Klineman are completely running away from it.

so.... thinking out loud here. At this point in time, based on results of the past few months, our two Olympic teams would be ATeam and KWJ/BS. if you're Claes/Sponcil or 2S, how much FIVB do you play vs. AVP? Do the sponsors have any say in it? It seems to me you only HAVE play enough FIVB to secure the #3 US spot, and that's to secure the Olympic berth in the event the ATeam of KWJ/BS are out by injury. Given you're a team playing for the Olympic back-up spot, how much grind and travel do you go though for a 30% or 50% or whatever the chance is of being an injury replacement? And if you're an also ran... that is Day/Flint or Larsen/Stockman, I guess the same question. If you're not chasing FIVB Olympic qualifying points any more, how much FIVB vs. AVP? And if the Olympics are not in the future, does anyone retire b/c that's one of the main reasons they're still playing? And lastly, how do the sponsors of 2S react given the fact that their sponsored athletes aren;t likely to be an Olympic team? Man, the unexpected resurgence of KWJ has really turned over the apple cart. I think one misconception is that an injury to one member of an Olympic Team disqualifies the entire team. If for instance the teams repping USA is ATeam and KWJ/BS and BS cannot participate. KWJ will be able to select a partner based on a set of players. Correct. Almost happened in 2004 with Misty

Correct. Almost happened in 2004 with Misty That rule has changed. The need to play in 12 events together as a team to qualify. That makes no sense. There would never, ever be an eligible replacement player if that were the case. The procedure quoted twice above in on a .pdf date 20 May, 2019. Are you saying the FIVB changed the rule in the past week and didn't update their website? That makes no sense either. Is the rule you refer to referring to original qualification, not replacement player qualification?

It’s best 12 tournaments for Olympic ranking points. I think they’re seeded based on those points if they do qualify for the Olympics.

Last cycle when Kerri's shoulder went out April was worried they wouldn't qualify and she would miss the Olympics. If it was that easy ot get a different partner per the rules I'm not sure what she was worried about then.

At this rate Ross Klineman would finish with almost 2,000 points more than KWJ and Brooke if they are the next best US team. That would pretty much be running away with it.

Doesn’t each country’s governing body have some leeway on who they can choose to represent the country, as long as their Olympic slots have been earned via the qualification process? Seems like an injury would be a legitimate reason for USAV to step in and award the spot at its discretion.

Viktoria Orsi Toth was banned for doping so they replaced her with Laura Giombini for Marta Menagatti. Rebecca Perry was not happy about this and voiced out on why she should’ve gone instead. But doping charges is not the same as an injury.

Think KWJ/Brooke have more room for improvement.
Based on the recent finals match, I though KWJ was the one that could improve some more
1) Anytime she served, Aussies were going on 2 before KWJ could get to the net and it was easy points. She will need to address that otherwise, good serve receive teams are going to torch her serve and the only point opportunities will come on Brooke's serve. Either a different serve that makes it harder to 2-ball, maybe hubby/wife serve down deep middle, or a high lollipop serve to a back corner that gives KWJ time to get to the net...but room for improvement and point scoring opportunities 2) KWJ setting: I felt that her setting of Brooke could be a tad better. I realize Brooke's window is small but I felt that KWJ had a few sets that were just 2-3 feet too far back putting more pressure on Brooke to come up with a higher degree of difficulty shot 3) KWJ needs to go on 2 more, Brook's serve receive passing was $$$ and there were a few 2 ball opportunities that KWJ did not take and instead set Brooke. Take the ez point.
Will be an interesting race for the Olympics. Seems to be a 3-team race if KWJ/Brooke keep rolling. My bet is that 2S will be on the outside looking in as Summer's presence at the net is not near the same as KWJ/Alix and that just might difference in a few results which lead to qualifying points. Hopefully everyone stays healthy in order for an exciting race to Tokyo.

They make it very clear that they earn a spot for their conferderation, but there’s no cases that we know of where the team who qualified and earned the spot was replaced with another team by their governing confederation, right?

I believe you are thinking about when there were questions regarding Kerri's shoulder during qualification. April stated that she would only try and qualify with Kerri, as there was still time to make a switch and still have enough time to qualify with someone else.

I really hope USA wouldn't do that. Our country doesn't work that way and the 2 teams that earn it point wise should be the ones that are allowed to go.

Man, the unexpected resurgence of KWJ has really turned over the apple cart. There’s still a whole year before the end of the qualification period. Anything can happen. Just look how quickly that win turned things around and affected a few other teams. No, I don’t think 2S, Sponcil/Claes, Larsen/Stockman and Flint/Day are going to stop playing FIVB. Just refer to Tri Bourne/John Hyden being edged out last cycle, but they still stuck to it till the very end. But some of those who openly said they were making a run have probably realized it’s not an realistic goal anymore, namely Wopat/Hocheavar and Urango/Ledoux. 2S indeed has big sponsors, namely Mikasa and Nike. Well, Sara was sponsored first. Then Summer was also sponsored.
