Should be best team from a school that has never won a NC. Otherwise it is just going to be a bunch of Stanford and Nebraska.

2007 Nebraska. 2 NPOY on one team with All americans and pretty much every position I know they had other issues but that team was stacked with talent 1 Maggie Griffin 2 Kayla Banwarth 3 Christina Houghtelling 4 Lindsey Licht 5 Rachel Schwartz 6 Jordan Wilberger 8 Brooke Delano 9 Sarah Pavan 10 Jordan Larson 11 Tracy Stalls 12 Rachel Holloway 15 Kori Cooper 17 Amanda Gates 19 Tara Mueller What a team!

Even though it does answer the question of one of the best teams to not win a national championship, I don't think anyone feels sorry for this group as they won the whole thing just the year before.

2007 Nebraska is possibly the biggest heartbreak of my lifetime.

2007 Nebraska is possibly the biggest heartbreak of my lifetime. How about Nebraska 2001? Returned everyone from the title team the year before, except Angie Oxley. Metcalf returned from sitting out in 2000.

Old school pick from an old man.
1994 Nebraska team 31-1. Lost in regional finals to Penn State after only dropping 6 sets all year. Beat Colorado in regional semi's 15-11, 15-7, 15-4. I talk to Pettit about it years later. They got into a bad rotational match-up against PSU and that was all she wrote. Won national championship next year.

OH. Seriously? 1984 Stanford: were ahead of the bruins 12-4 in the 5th set (rally scoring, even though it was the sideout era). They gave up 11 straight points; lost 15-13. Two other SU teams qualify: the 2006 + 2007 squads. Although I am describing some tight, close, heartbreaking losses, they have won some nail biters too -- particularly-especially in Regional Finals, along w/ a few Semis and a couple of Finals -- & 8 NC's, in total. I do not dwell on the past: with the incoming recruits and the core returning! I dwell on the future, BUT those who do not learn from history, or study it, are more likely to repeat past mistakes. Gonna put the end of my previous post back in context - subsequent quote/post missed my meaning. SOLELY looking forward to Stanford's upcoming season: no further!

This Stanford team made a really good Washington team look pedestrian. They lost a step against Nebraska in the next round though.

P.S: And Yes, it is applicable and wise to learn from the past - BUT, to become phobic, say, vis a' vis rematches of schools whose most recent match was years before? NO.

BYU 1998. Epic 5 game, 3.5 hour battle in the WAC Championship against Hawaii. Hawaii wins 24-22 in the 5th. As a result, Hawaii goes to Florida, BYU goes to Penn State in the tournament. I reffed at the Penn State sight, until they found out I was a BYU alum (it was right on my information sheet!). So they put me in charge of keeping rally score to see how it compared to side out scoring. BYU was REALLY good. Penn State was even better. BUT, Long Beach was amazing, and won the whole thing.

I remember that WAC match, an absolute nail biter. I think it’s one of the greatest matches in volleyball history, if not the greatest, IMO. This was before rally scoring so the balls kept on going back and forth, siding out. I think all 5 games, but 1 were decided by only 2 pts. That night, neither team deserved to lose.

Forgot that the 5th game was rally scoring. I was going crazy throughout the whole match, when sets were called games. I still call them games, myself.
