USA down 3-4 during the first side switch.
Now down 5-9. Phil and Nick with a service error each. Nick hits out out followed by one that’s blocked.
8-10. So close to having tied it... Chile is winning in the scrappy plays. 8-11.
Tech timeout at 9-12. Commentator says Dalcena still look pretty much still in this one. Phil has two blocks that went out. Just steady it out a bit boys!

Phil with a huge block after a long rally to make it 10-13.
Phil serves an ace to make it 11-14.
Phil goes on two. 14-16. He’ll have to do something as the set is coming to an end.
USA calls a timeout 14-18. I hope USA makes a comeback like how the Italians did.
But Lucena gets called for double contact and now they’re down 14-19.
Nick serves and one dig by Esteban sends it straight back to the Americans side. Then Nick gets blocked again. 15-21.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Dalcena needs to think of something else for the second set to push it to the third.
Wind is blowing like crazy.

Second set.
Phil terminates a long rally with a huge spike. 2-0 Nick gets a huge dig but Phil hits it into the net. 3-2 Phil hanging on with a block and tapping down the ball. 5-2 Chile is serving tough. Back within just a one point difference despite a three point lead just minutes earlier. 6-5 Phil with a MONSTER BLOCK! 8-5 Marco tools one out of bounds. 8-6 But Nick tools one out too. 9-6 Nick digs one out of play. 10-8 Nick loses a joust at the net. Now back to a one point margin. 10-9 Nick hits one out. Tied 10-10. Nick then gets blocked Chile takes the lead for the first time at tech timeout. 10-11
That’s 3 straight points given up. Something needs to happen and it needs to be quick.

Nick finally scores a point again. 11-11 Phil almost served an ace but Chile got out of trouble and got the kill. 11-12 Then Chile serves an ace. 11-13 Chile is on fire in all departments right now. 12-14 Phil with another service area. 13-15
It’s not looking good for Dalcena at all. Phil with tons of errors too.
Phil with another one out of bounds. 13-16 USA calls a timeout. I hope they pull a comeback, like how Italy did earlier down a set and down 14-18. But will it happen...
Phil with ANOTHER receiving error... 13-17 Then he hits one out. 13-18 OMG this is frustrating to watch. Nick goes into the net once again. 14-20 Chile goes on two and takes the gold. 15-21.
So USA takes silver.

I wished this went three sets. Way too many errors for USA Today. But at least they won a medal.

That was ridiculously sloppy. No ball control at all for the US. Phil was setting Nick very poorly, both guys missing passes and hitting balls out. Chile did a nice job of staying consistent and aggressive but hard to imagine Nick/Phil beating anyone playing that way. Very disappointing to see them slip back into some of their awful habits. Really did not fight for this one at all. Came out flat, got a couple bad breaks and didn't do very much.

Now Dalcena is 2-1 against the Chileans.
Chile seems to be having a breakthrough at the start of the season. First gold at a 4*

They had a three point lead in the second set and I thought they were going to take it to three. Tech timeout at 10-11 and they only scored another 5 points to end the set.

Nick was giving up points before the tech timeout and then Phil was giving up points after tech timeout.
Second gold for Dalcena here. Will they get gold here...

I think it was 5-2 and Nick/Phil switched to the good side then had 3 swings at a real point and lost the rally. Seemed like that was the match right there. The lack of resilience is worrying. If they had to lose, nice that it was a fun team like Chile though.

Methodical by CHI. Nice job of them shrinking the court on USA, well played.. You know, I was thinking the same thing as they were playing against Adrian and Rossi last week
