Rarely has Texas ever had their setter honored as first team All-Big 12, let alone setter of the year; maybe just Chloe Collins one season. Maybe it's justified. But, we all know that Texas is pretty much going to have 2-3 hitters on the All-Conference Team each season (maybe no MB this season). So, could be that the other coaches are trying to "spread the love" and setter is where Texas gets overlooked. Again, each season is different; and, there are always good setters in the mix; but, I recall some years where Texas' setter had the better stats, but it wasn't recognized. Maybe that's one position where meeting the eye test is a big factor. I agree that because Texas is so talented hitting wise that other coaches are less likely to give a Texas setter SOY, but twice in Collins four years the award went to Havili who was a pretty good setter in her on right.

I would give SOY to Gabriel. Texas has a better team hitting in Big 12 matches than Baylor (.331 to .255, though Baylor gets the worst defensive team in WVU on Saturday), and she has also done a good job spreading it out amongst UT's hitters. With Pressley (who I would have as National POY right now, much less Big 12), it almost does not matter who the setter is. Lockin is good and all, but Pressley is much better and would be getting the kills regardless of who the setter is.
COY is the one that more likely goes to the team that wins the Big 12, and I think that will be Elliott. Two coaches who do deserve a look are Gray-Walton at Oklahoma and Graystone at Texas Tech. LGW has done a pretty quick turnaround at OU, and they should make the tournament. As for Tech, I thought they would be terrible this year after Owens graduated, but they have done great and can finish the first half of Big 12 5-3 with a win over OU on Saturday.
It is a long-shot that Tech makes the tournament (their RPI is not good), but if they are anywhere near the bubble come Dec. 1, Graystone might get my vote.

Who was the last Big 12 player of the year that didn't play on the conference champ? Payne won in 2016, but not 2015. Payne was possibly better in 2015 - but I don't think it mattered as Texas won the conference that year.

Payne was possibly better in 2015 - but I don't think it mattered as Texas won the conference that year. Twice. 2010, Juliann Faucette of Texas won despite Nebraska winning the Big 12 (UT was 18-2, Nebby was 19-1 so not a big difference. I think that was the right call that year). Then in 2004, Nebraska ran the table at 20-0, but the POY award was given to Mira Topic of 16-4 Texas. That was before my time following ISU volleyball, so I have no clue there, but that is a surprising gap. If Baylor goes 14-2 and Texas 16-0 and the individual numbers stay roughly where they are now, I would probably still go Pressley, but if Baylor starts dropping matches to the other seven (Texas will not lose to anyone in the other seven), that becomes harder to justify.

Baylor was a few points away from sweeping but then Coach McGuyre put freshman KJ Johnson in for Pressley and then they lost their lead.

Baylor takes WVU 3-1 (-19, -17 +22, -18). WVU looks better than conference record suggests.

Pressley had a so so match to that point and WVU simply outplayed Baylor at the end of that set. Don’t blame the freshman!

Definitely don’t think she’s the reason they lost the set but Baylor was up 18-13 after going on a 8-3 run when she came in. Then WVU went on a 12-4 run to finish it off (7-3 run with Johnson in). By the time Pressley came back in the momentum had already shifted. I think Baylor wins that set if Pressley stays in.

Then VDM had an error and after the TO 3 kills by WVU and finally one from Pressley, then a BU service error to end it. Pressley was well contained by WVU the whole match and I really don’t think it would have mattered much in the 3rd.

Coach McGuyre got his 100th win at Baylor. He is the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 wins, doing it in just 142 matches (.704).
