Completely agree here dantes setting was avg at best along with this block and serve, very replaceable player but I'm not sure if they have another setter coming in or they might be in deep shot. Kobi was ok,his defense got so much better. By all accounts, Dante was a great guy but below average athlete with no legit jumper at all. Can't believe he couldn't figure that out over his time in Irvine. Coach K just seems too damn nice which is not great for coach.

What hurt UCI the most this year was they only had two outsides on the roster. And one got hurt. They had no eligible oh to come in and play. I don’t know how that happened. Grant Friedman would have been a senior this year and could have played outside but he did not come back to play. I am surprised they did not get someone last year to play oh from a jc. In the middle of the season they started playing a true freshman at setter. Was Dante hurt? Sean Farmer probably would have played that role as a redshirt freshman but he did not come back this year. So when you have only two oh and one gets hurt, you are bound to lose some matches. I don’t know why they didn’t try Parker at oh. He was pretty steady at libero and maybe they didn’t want too many moving pieces but joel’s Injury pretty much wrecked them. Currently they have only one setter on the roster for next season and I haven't seen them sign anyone for next year. Will they get a jc player or international setter come in? What happened to Kam?

Putting this in a new thread as they are thankfully graduating a ton of players that were decent but never able to rise above being better than average. Koubi, Karl, Dante, David, just never special enough to really do damage. This reset needs to be even more thorough with Stadick sitting more, he's just so unathletic, if he weren't 7 feet tall, he wouldn't be playing. None of those 4 guys were blue chip top 20 recruits that were members of the Usa junior national team coming out of high school. They were the exact opposite, recruits that Kniffin found while turning over every rock in the recruiting landscape. Take Koubi for example. Koubi was visiting from France and Kniffin saw him playing beach volleyball one day and offered him an indoor scholarship. Even to UCI fans they came into the program as unknown recruits or project players. This season and last year UCI was a solid top 5 team in the country which rises above better than average. UCI wasn't a top 3 team that had a good chance to contend for the title. But this class of unknowns were special for what they were able to accomplish the last 2 years but just probably not talented enough to make the Final Four. Who knows maybe they were also unlucky. If Long Beach state and Hawaii didn't have their best teams in program history this year at the same time maybe UCI could have made it into the Final Four.

Yeah they need to sit their future National Team and former First Team All American middle 🙄. Because he can’t serve. Because that’s definitely the most important thing for a MB.
What they need is a bigger, more athletic setter who can connect with his bigger middles. And they definitely need to serve much, much tougher going forward, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say Stadick needs to sit because of it.

He can't be per rules, there is no coach in volleyball who'd allow such a poor server take serves otherwise.

I've seen his serves, why don't they just have him serve a lollipop, that float serve of his is useless anyway, just flippn put the ball in play. He's never going to ace anyone, so he should be able to get 100% of his serves in.

Longtime UCI fan here. - Dante was not a great setter. Not great location, and not a great athlete either. Looking back, I think he was UCI's worst setter of the last decade at least. But what really killed us this season was that stretch where Garcia got significant playing time. He seems pretty athletic, but his setting was a total disaster. Hope Vorenkamp can step up next year.
- Agree with what others have said about this team lacking a killer instinct. Hawaii and LB have a winning mentality and swagger. They walk onto the court knowing they're gonna take it to the opponent. We don't.
- The problem with Staddick is that he hasn't developed as much as we might have hoped. His hits have absolutely no heat and his serves are PATHETIC! If it didn't piss me off so much, it would be laughable. How can he not have figured out how to float the damn ball in?!
- Koubi, Parker, and Apfelbach were solid, but inconsistent. They don't deserve the heat they're taking here.
- Overall, future looks bright if (and it's a big if) we can get a good setter.

I'm a little confused re: your comment on Vorenkamp... isn't he a middle?

Yeah they need to sit their future National Team middle 🙄. Stadick has no real future with the senior national team. Exactly, it's absurd to discuss like it's gospel. There are far more active and athletic middles to pick from who aren't 7 feet but do far more consistent damage.

Thank you for confirming what I've been saying about Dante for ages. That backup didn't look much better though.

I'm a little confused re: your comment on Vorenkamp... isn't he a middle? I had thought so as well, but recently heard he's been practicing as a setter this year.
