I might throw in a word or two of caution here. One, Brooke was a good (although I wouldn't say elite) beach player at the juniors level - you could definitely see the potential, though. I think she'll eventually be an excellent player for Hawai'i, but she hasn't played beach seriously for a few years now, and I think it might be too much too ask her to step right in at on of the top flights. Rasmussen has not played college beach (she was on Oregon's roster, but never actually played), and I can't recall ever seeing her at the junior level. I've never seen Hellvig play, but her results on the European junior circuit were not impressive.
In other words, patience. The three I mentioned above are clearly all talented volleyball players, but it may take some time for them to become high-level contributors for the beach program. Also, while Van Sickle is definitely playing beach, has it been confirmed that Rassmussen/Hellvig are going to be on the beach roster as well?

Agree with geddy. BVS did have a beach background in her prep career but only played one year for a low level college beach team. She does have the potential and athleticism but a lot of the beach only girls have the advantage. For this upcoming season I see her fighting for the bottom flights which is still good considering the type of talent we have.
Rasmussen said she wants to play beach but of course there has been a lot of indoor players that say that and don't follow through with it because of how much commitment it takes. I'd be shocked if Hellvig didn't want to be on the team considering her love and success on the beach.
Also I wouldn't count of Wagoner playing beach. If you watch her play, she has great technique and a high IQ but she relies a lot on that, you can see she doesn't have the fastest feet or highest vertical which is good to have on the beach. But who knows Iosia doesn't either but she got to start.

Are there even spots for all the cross-overs? With 5 flights (or exhibition 6), that's 12 players.
The "top" beach-only players: Julia Scoles Amy Ozee Kylin Loker Sofia Russo Pani Napoleon Morgan Martin
The "top" incoming beach recruits: Anna Maidment Sabrina Hardisty Maia Hanneman
Possible Indoor cross-overs: Norene Iosia Brooke Van Sickle Hanna Hellvig Jolie Rasmussen Bailey Choy Riley Wagoner
Wildcard grad transfer: Harlee Kekauoha
That's 16 players for 12 "starting" spots. There's no room! I suppose the only possibility is that Wagoner and Choy may not play, and a couple of the freshmen along with Rasmussen who has never played beach will not start but merely "train up" (or redshirt) in preparation for next season.

I know I’m being overly optimistic. But given how Hall and his team did last year with lack of depth, my expectations this coming season is high.

You left Ilihia Huddleston off your "Top" incoming list. Recent AVCA All-'Murican, no big deal, just another player to consider.

Well, I'm no authority on "top" so don't sweat it. But now, that's 17 girls for 10-12 "starting" spots.

The AVCA All American list is pretty much a joke, but Hiddleston is for real. Easily Hawai’i’s top 2019 recruit.

Not sure if Wagoner or Choy are going to play. Choy reason for returning home is because she wanted to play for Robyn. Choy also have to concentrate on her studies. She might want to spend her time doing other things.
Riley was a pretty good basketball player in HS and I get the sense that Beeman might be in Robyn’s ear to let her play bball.
If Riley does go out for beach, I get the feeling she will be someone who will have to wait her turn cause Hall doesn’t know much about her beach skills and also, Hall loyalty will be with his beach recruit. Hellivig will probably be too good for Hall to make her wait since Hanna is an accomplished beach player.

Pretty sure that if Riley was to play b-ball, her scholie would have to be transferred to a b-ball scholarship. Same thing happened a few years back with Megan Huff. That would free up a vball scholie for Robyn if true though.

Robyn would only agree to let Beeman let riley play basketball, IF she did not lose riley at ALL during the volleyball season. Other than that, no way robyn says yes to that

I know I’m being overly optimistic. But given how Hall and his team did last year with lack of depth, my expectations this coming season is high. I agree! The biggest losses are Maglio and Homayun. The team still returns a lot of talent who are improved from last season. Then, with new recruits and potential cross-overs, this team could be a contender. UCLA, while returning a lot of talent, still lost 3 key veteran players (The twins and Sponcil). USC has lost some great players as well (Graudina, Bustamante, Cannon...), but also have reloaded. In the Big West, with TVW likely still out and Jones graduated, Hawai'i may have a leg up on the BWC Title.

My "top" players who will have a spot on the top 5 flights are (in no particular order): - Morgan Martin
- Julia Scoles
- Hannah Hellvig
- Amy Ozee
- Pani Napolean
This is of course, assuming Hannah plays beach. But, I am fairly confident she will be playing. I also believe you can't discount some of the beach-only players. - Kylin Loker
- Ilia Huddleston
- Anna Maidment
Harlee Kekauoha has been playing a lot of beach volleyball and training hard, so look for her to be in the mix as well. I think BVS could be in the mix for the top flights as well. Rasmussen, Choy, and potentially Wagoner (depending on if they go out for the team) could be in the mix, but I don't think it will be an easy transition given the talent on the beach team, and due to the fact that they only have a couple of months to get their beach game on before the start of the season. Chemistry will also be a factor as to whether or not they see playing time in the top flights. I can see Hanneman/Hardisty either in the mix, depending on chemistry, or red-shirting much like Napolean did. I'm not sure if Russo will be able to maintain a position in the top 5 given she didn't play much at all over the summer...but she does have fall camp to work on it. I also have no idea what the pairing will be come Spring next year. My pairings also change constantly at this point. I don't think even the players or coaches have any idea what they will be. I like diyakuno lineup's...I've thought Martin and Maidment could be similar to a Martin/Ozee pairing. Here's my first crack at the lineup (and this too will probably change a hundred times over): Maybe a more "predictable" type lineup like this: - Martin/Ozee
- Scoles/Napolean
- Hellvig/Van Sickle
- Loker/Huddleston
- Maidment/Kekauoha
Scoles and Napolean were good together and have a lot of power. Martin and Ozee didn't quite make it work last year, but still have the potential to make it work and both are improved from last year. Huddleston watched her big sis and Loker play several matches together last year and joked about playing together next year.
Or something less obvious like: - Martin/Scoles
- Hellvig/Ozee
- Loker/Maidment
- Kekauoha/Napolean
- Rasmussen/Huddleston

No love for Iosia? I like that with the potential crossovers and the beach-only players, there will be a lot of depth that we just didn't have last year. To be honest, I wouldn't mind if Hall put out an only-beach player team in the top 5 flights. The indoor crossovers will definitely have to have a steep learning curve to potentially start in the top 5 (other than Hellvig and Iosia), but Van Sickle, Rasmussen, and maybe Choy will be nice additions to the team. I like the less obvious line-up that you put out, but I might have Van Sickle or Iosia at the 5th flight over Rasmussen. Plus, Koa mentioned that we might have a PAC 12 transfer after this Fall semester (with one year of eligibility remaining) who will be in the top 3 flights.

In addition to more depth, the team could have a nice mix of size and good defenders if we get the cross-overs. How's this? These would be a solid top 6 flights, and I can imagine that Russo will put herself in the mix as well. I'm excited for this upcoming beach season, and I'm looking forward to their Fall exhibition matches to get a look at the beach-only players!
