Some trivia:
What are the Top 5 largest college campuses (in acreage) in America?
(No cheating. I myself could correctly guess only 2 of the 5 off the top of my head.)

Hawaii leads the Big West in attendance (2651) and is #24 nationally. But it's the biggest school and has it's own market so that's no surprise. It needs to turn it's fan base into performances on the field. I would say baseball is one of the Big West's better attended sports. I always hear about certain Big West teams drawing well in soccer (which most Hawaii fans could care less about) Yes, it's sad watching Long Beach State these days. I like the coach too.
Biggest school in terms of what--undergraduate enrollment or size of campus? In either case, the University of Hawaii is one of the smallest on both accounts. With an undergraduate enrollment of 12,881, UH pales in enrollment in comparison to CSUN(35,609 students), CS Fullerton(34,920 students), and LB State(31,351 students). In terms of the size of campus--in acreage--the University of Hawaii covers over 320 acres in the Manoa Valley. The largest campus--in total acreage--in the Big West is UC Irvine: campus spans over 1527 acres. The smallest campus--in terms of acreage--is Cal State Fullerton. Its campus covers only 236 acres. Impressive knowledge Probably the most pertinent number is that of the athletic budget of each school

By comparison, the University of Oregon's campus size is only 295 acres, smaller than Hawaii's. Of course, it's a Pac-12 school (and Nike's school) so they've got $$$ up their wazoo. I only singled out Oregon because that's where Hawaii's three transfers (Rasmussen, Van Sickle, and Hanawahine) are from.
Anyway, you'll be surprised to learn how large (or small) various campuses are around the USA, regardless of prestige.

Not sure, but when I went to my niece's wedding near Rome, GA, there was a small private college in the vicinity named Berry College that claimed to be one of the largest (by acreage) in the United States.

Good info! And good discussion! I wonder too how much of Hawaii's budget is borne out of necessity, due to the travel costs... UH's own travel costs or the travel costs of the BWC's member schools that it subsidizes? The top three schools also field football teams, which probably require a big chunk of funds.

Cal poly has to be the largest, due to huge working ag lands donated Would think davis is 2nd Irvine and davis have the med schools, so those have to be top 3

Agreed with the other posters that both football and Hawaii's travel budget greatly impacts the numbers. My best guess is that even if the budgets were normalized to subtract out Hawaii's unique travel budget and football budgets the order would remain the same. Hawaii, with their superior fan support and with TV contracts from football, has revenues that dwarf the rest of the conference. They definitely have a much higher burn rate, not only travel & travel subsidies but maintaining Aloha stadium. Maybe a Hawaii fan knows the numbers here. Interestingly, UC Davis has a $7M bigger budget than CP though both play football in the same conf. This is very likely due to the fact that Davis sponsors 24(!) sports vs. CP which sponsors 20. I believe most other schools sponsor around 20 teams, maybe a bit less.

Aloha Stadium is owned by the State of Hawai'i. I believe UH does pay rent, but it's not a large amount. FY18 receipts for the stadium were about $7.6M, expenses were about $7.7M. The weekly swap meet, parking, and advertising accounts for about $6.5M of revenue. Total annual rent brings in about $325K. The Stadium Authority maintains an operating fund to adequately support maintenance, salaries, utilities, etc. Event activities (including UH games) generate their own profits/losses for sponsors and planners.

I didn't offer a complete comparison that included two of the largest campuses--in total acreage--in the Big West. According to its website, Cal Poly has a total of 9,678 acres in total with 1,321 acres for the "main core," and 155 acres considered the "campus core." UC Davis web site listed their total acreage as 7,309 with no further breakdowns. Thanks again for the correction!
