Thompson has already proven herself in the VNL and the Olympic qualifier. She doesn't have pro experience yet, but that shouldn't keep her off the roster. Thompson did have a good VNL tournament. One tournament does not give Thompson an automatic berth to the Olympics. Plus the VNL was weak this year. Like I said previously, rookies always do well in these tournaments ya because they are unknown, once teams scouted them and figure out there tendencies, most top teams will shut you down. Imagine if One I’d the opposites get I guess and you have to stray relying on a rookie to side out. I agree that she doesn't get an automatic place on the team. I'm just pushing back on the idea that she is "unproven" and "nowhere ready" and therefore shouldn't make it. But yes, it is true in all sports that once opposing teams get a scouting report on a new player, they're better positioned to slow them down. But then of course the player and their coaches will get to work on that and make adjustments to the opponents' adjustments. And so on.

I hope Thompson does well in Club after college, Iam just not sure if she has enough time to catch up. Like I said again both Drew’s and Lowe are having good club seasons and Thompson will have to adjust pretty quickly to the pro game.

I had seen that Annie Drews got a USA volleyball award last week, and I assumed, contrary to what I watched in the World Cup or VNL, that Drews must have outplayed Lowe. I didn't watch the whole thing but I did see Drews exhibit a deer in the headlights look in one match in VNL, and then Lowe came in and performed more confidently. So... seeing this poll is currently 20 votes for Drews and 3 votes for Lowe, I wondered if my memory had become confused. So instead of finding those youtube matches and rewatching, I visited the FIVB website for the World Cup to look up the hitting stats. Drews: 105/29/225 = .337 hitting efficiency Lowe: 75/18/146 = .390 hitting efficiency So my questions are many 1) do people think hitting efficiency is not that important? 2) does Drews play much better defense than Lowe? 3) outside of World Cup, does Drews have better hitting numbers? Incidentally, by way of comparison, here are the hitting efficiency numbers of the Opposites at the just concluded Club World Championships: Egonu: .435 Haak: .422 Gibbemeyer .322 Boskovic .304 Fawcett: .246 Hooker: .254 At VNL 2019:Drews: .322 Lowe: .320 Thompson: .290 Stats are basically nothing without the context of opponent. Drews might have had a lower hitting efficency in the world cup, however, it’s worthy to note that most of the time she has been hitting off Poulter, with whom she has been working on with in terms of establishing that connection. When you see her performance in matches against opponents with Carlini setting her (Korea, Dom Rep to name them), Drews can be seen to work more fluidly. Karsta has had Carlini as her setter mostly in that tournament. Carlini sets best at OPP. Not so much Poulter. Should be a factor. Also Lowe starting against the weaker opponents. More than that, throughout the summer, Drews has really positioned herself as the main scorer and I thin with USA gym and the rest of the world even, that’s what is being looked at with a premium. Egonu has been known to be statistically dismal hitting off Malinov at NT but showing stellar efficiency with the best setter in the world in Wolosz. But you’d still tale her because you know she’ll score either way. Not saying Drews is an Egonu but her being able to put up big numbers with any setter and getting the job done is what matters. VNL is a different story. It’s basically a rigodon of setters. There hasn’t been much consistency as to who starts with who. You have to ask yourself: who will get that point? At this stage, I’d bank on Drews and Thompson more than Lowe.

Pretty sure Lowe started against lesser opponents which could suggest the higher hitting percentage. She came in off the bench for Drews and out performed her on several occations. It didn't matter who was setting her (Carlini/Poulter). She is playing really well in Italy right now. I really do think that all three of them will be battling it out for two spots. I really don't know who between Lowe/Drews should get the nod at this point.

I wish I had accurate stats, by match, but as I wrote above faults are not included in each match's stats. I will be happy with whichever two win the spots out of the three. The one thing that impressed me was how Lowe put UCLA on her back when there was no effective OH. I have seen her determination in a match and nothing scares her. It's hard to quantify that warrior-leader type of spirit. On the contrary, I did see Drews tighten up and shut down when things weren't going right. That's not something you're going to measure in the gym. To counter that, she seems to have a fantastic attitude.

Annie Drews v. Dani Drews is almost as confusing as Carli Lloyd v. Carli Lloyd.

Lowe is the only one with Olympic experience at this positron. That may sway the odds in her favor

Iam sorry but Thompson is nowhere ready for Tokyo.. Both Lowe (Italy) and Drews (Japan) are having great seasons for there club teams and I doubt Karch will rely on an unproven player during the Olympics.. My only conclusion based on your comment is that you didn't watch any of the VNL/Olympic Qualification matches this past summer. Thompson looked absolutely ready for Tokyo. Maybe Lowe can overcome and go to Tokyo with Drews. But, at the end of the summer, Thompson was better. And I don't think you could find anyone who actually watched to disagree. Thompson VNL ( against B teams) vs Bulgaria: 9/25 (36%) Italy: 6/28 (21%) DR: 10/29 (34%) Germany: 9/27 (33%) Japan: 9/18 (50%) South Korea: 8/18 (50%) Brazil: Final Round 33 points. ( This match was just a friendly with backups as both team were already qualified). OG Q Argentina: 13/34 (38%) Bulgaria: 20/47 (43%) As you can see she hit over 50% only against Brazil`s B Bench, South Korea and Japan'B. I think you have the impression that she did so well because she played good against Bulgaria after replacing Drews who had a terrible game. But Bulgaria is not even a elite team and won`t be at the OG. Who`s better Drews or Lowe? well...who played good against China at the WC?.....Neither.

Lowe rarely outperformed Drews this past summer, and you guys' most hated poster is also correct in pointing out that Thompson had plenty of bad games, the selective memories on this board...
Opposite is up in the air. I don't think anyone has their spot secured, though Drews is currently at the top of that list. Thompson is not a sure thing (I agree she's great before you start crying, though I think she would do well to actually be an OH for USA – she was the most terminal outside this past summer since we love to cherry pick stats. Better passer than Lee from what I've seen.)
Lowe could very well regain that number one spot if her play is consistent. I'd take a combination of Drews/Lowe and Thompson in the end, as I think the sub dynamic in that situation works very well.

All 3 make the team, with Thompson doing time at OH as well. Hadn't really considered her for OH, but she's really a 2 for 1 given Opp/OH versatility. That would mean that between Hill, Robinson, MBH and Larsen, two would have to not make it. p.s. why does Hill play so well for Imoco and doesn't get the reps with USA? She can still terminate and pass very well. Serving is her only average performance. I was surprised at the quality of her serve receive at Club Championships, including tough to reach serves laterally and in front of her.

Rooting for that Drews/Thompson OPP duo come Tokyo. They also seem to be really close which is something Karch values 🤡
