Simple. Nick has never been a great player, and now Father Time is catching up with him. Phil is...tall. Tall huh? That's it? That's all it takes? Just be tall, that's why Phil is Phil? Ridiculous take OK, OK, Phil is MORE than tall! Feel better now? BTW, I never said "just," and I don't think I was explaining why Phil is Phil (whatever the Hell that means).

They serve way too easy. 39 year olds can still jump serve. They're not putting any pressure on teams and when the block and dig game is off then they aren't scoring any real points. They look tired physically and mentally. They need to find some fire to motivate them. I would love to see them talk more smack and show more emotion. Phil is arguably the best beach volleyball of all time and he's letting people beat him like he doesn't care. To me it's more mental than physical. good to see phil jump serving again. I'll take full credit.

It was interesting to hear Phil talk in yesterday's interview. He pretty much said these exact words "the fire isn't there". Meanwhile Nick is just staring wide eyed straight ahead into space. Well, Phil already knew that the fire was out last year. Like I said earlier, he is playing this year to help his friend Nick and please his wife who convinced him to play on. Those are not sufficient reasons to play after the fire is out. He is not being fair to himself.

I am soooo disappointed in them.
That ends Phil’s streak of having won at least a gold medal each season.
I think they’ll have to go to Mexico in November. Cribb is gonna catch up with a good finish here.
And let’s face it guys, they haven’t beaten a top team since their run in FTL last March.

I think it’s BS they are out here trying to take an Olympic spot when Phil clearly doesn’t want to be playing and doesn’t give two %*$#s.

Are they going to suddenly decide to call it quits during the offseason 😞 They’ve really dropped off drastically since the start of the season. From 2018 and 2019, it seems they play best when fresh and at the beginning of the season. It’s really heartbreaking to see them like this.

I agree with you though. Phil has been there, done that. But, the USA is all about earning the spot and I don't think anybody wants them to step aside just so that a team with lesser results can fill in, like Cribb. It's very possible Cribb could surpass Dalcena anyway. There is the rest of this tourney, Chetumal 4* in Nov., a couple of 3* in 2020, and I think 5 4* still in 2020. The weakness of this qualification process is that results from 20 months before the Olympics are given as much weight as results in the 6 months leading up to the Olympics. That just makes no sense. USA volleyball could take the FIVB process, and then tweak it to suit our purposes, if they so chose...

Id much prefer the spot go to Jake, he definitely seems to still care about and love playing.

Qualifying for beach volleyball has been flawed since the beginning when some guy named Christopher St John carried a hack named Carl Henkel to a 5th place finish at the Olympics in Atlanta.....now, with that said, I'm willing to bet many of the posers on here didn't even see the epic match between Smith/Henkel and Kiraly/Steffes.....still to me one of the all time classics on the beach. I would post a link to it, but the pricks at the IOC have decided to block it for copyright reasons (This video contains content from International Olympic Committee, who has blocked it on copyright grounds - @$$%*!*S). Anywho, my points here are many, and I'm correct so there is no need to debate it with me: 1) On paper, Sinjin and Henkel had NO BUSINESS being in the Olympics, yet the still almost pulled off playing for a medal, so I will never say no one who hasn't found a way to make the olympics doesn't deserve to be there (I mean we all pulled for Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican Bobsled team). 2) The decision dating back to the start should have never EVER involved the FIVB. How they get to decide who plays in the Olympics and its process is grotesquely flawed. The US should have final say on who is going and the only way to really decide that is to have a play in prior to the Olympics to determine who is playing in peak form. This way, if someones heart isn't in it, you don't have to worry, they won't be there PLUS you get the best teams playing at that time. No team should be qualified 18 months prior to the Olympics, that is just idiotic. 3) In most other olympic qualifications it has always been the best US athlete versus the best US athlete for the spots on the US Olympic team....I don't think Michael Phelps making the team had anything with how he swam against the Aussies, or American sprinters running against Jamaicans, or US Gymnastic team being selected by how they fared against the Romanians....this should be an in country decision. Now my beef turns from the FIVB to the IOC and the USOC, and corruption - yes boys and girls, there is corruption at the IOC and the USOC which is why the Olympics is starting to lose its luster 4) Finally, and most importantly, if Phil has lost his fire and doesn't want to play that should be HIS decision, no one else....with that said don't be surprised if you see Nick and Phil get focused, real focused, and qualify, and then do pretty well - I'm not expecting them (or any American team) to medal, but I'm hoping for a good showing. Also, for what it is worth, I've been told Phil has had a bit of a nagging injury all summer.
I lied, I'm not finished.....and changing topic a bit....I truly hope April Ross ends up getting the gold. She is the most deserving, has been the best US female player for nearly 9 years now, and is really deserving! Ok, I think this is my first post in a couple of years, I'm just getting warmed up for the rest of qualifying and the Olympics

Ok, I think this is my first post in a couple of years, I'm just getting warmed up for the rest of qualifying and the Olympics To points 2 & 3: the US has the final say on who is going. The players can just earn a spot for the federation and not for themselves. If the US federation wants they can still organize beachvolleyball 'trials'. If that would be fairer than the actual process I don't know. As to the fireless Phil, that's his character, it hasn't been substantially different in the past and won't change in future. He's obviously past his prime but still would be competitive with an adequate partner. Nick looks focused and motivated to me, at least judging from his physical shape.
