I hope this helps bring the contest back to the first page to celebrate all the effort you've put into it. I admire the gusto! 1. Name the Hawaii starting lineup, specifically, S, OH, OH, OH, M, M, L. You need not differentiate between OH and OPP. (7 pts: 1 pt for each correct name) S = Iosia OH = Rasmussen OH = Sibley OH = Hellvig M = Williams M = Westerberg L = Okino 2. List all Hawaii players who plays at least one point up to and including the moment when one team reaches 15 points in the first set. Normally, this is the technical timeout, however in some cases, the technical timeout is not called because one team calls a timeout shortly before any team reaches 15 points. (Maximum number of points = number of players who actually plays) (Contest point value = number of correct answers - number of incorrect answers) OKINO, WESTERBERG, WILLIAMS, SIBLEY, RASMUSSEN, HELLVIG, WAGONER, VAN SICKLE 3. Which team will win the match? (3 pts) HAWAII 4. What is the final score, in sets (regardless of team)? (e.g., 3-0, 3-1, 3-2) (2 pts) 3-1 5. Which team will score first in the first set? (1 pt) HAWAII 6. Which team will call a timeout first in the first set? (1 pt) SAN DIEGO 7. Which team will reach the 15th point first in the first set? (1 pt) HAWAII 8. What will be Hawaii's team hitting percent (in the format, 0.xyz) at the end of the match? (Contest point value: 3 pts if within +/- 0.010; 2 pts if within +/- 0.020; 1 pt if within +/- 0.030) .278 9. Which Hawaii player will get the first kill? (1 pt) HELLVIG 10. Which Hawaii player will serve first? (1 pt) IOSIA 11. Which Hawaii player will be the first to pass the ball? (1 pt) IOSIA 12. Which Hawaii player will get the first dig? (1 pt) OKINO 13. Which Hawaii player (if any) will get the first block? (Both "Block solo" and "Block assist" counts as a "block.") (Your answer may also be "none”) (1 pt) RASMUSSEN 14. Which Hawaii player (if any) will get the first ace? (Your answer may also be "none") (1 pt) IOSIA 15. Which Hawaii player will get the most kills by the end of the match? (1 pt) RASMUSSEN 16. Which Hawaii player will get the second most kills by the end of the match? (1 pt) HELLVIG 17. Which Hawaii player will have the highest hitting percentage by the end of the match? (1 pt) WESTERBERG 18. Which Hawaii player will have more Assists -- Bailey Choy or Norene Iosia? (1 pt) IOSIA 19. Which Hawaii player will be named "Player of the Match" (as determined by the broadcasting company)? (1 pt) RASMUSSEN 20. What will be the official attendance listed on the box score? (3 pts if answer is within +/-200; 2 pts if answer is within +/-400; 1 pt if answer is within +/-600) If no attendance number is listed in the box score, I will use whatever number is mentioned in Cindy Luis's post-game article. If she mentions a turnstile number and another number (usually tickets sold), I will use the turnstile number. 5,678 T1. (tiebreaker) Name the six Hawaii players who will play the first point of the first set. (The correct answer will be the six players on the court while the first served ball is in the air during the rally of the first point in the first set.) Wolfgang Could you make this contest simpler so people who did not graduate from Caltech or MIT can play it? Is it really that difficult? I mean, you just answer a series of questions. Wolfgang Just posting on this board is difficult for bigfan

Next time I do a contest, I should just have one simple rule:
"Copy-paste the text below and answer the questions."
If I don't like any submissions, I PM them and tell them how to fix it.

I understand why you are being so specific, but it can seem overly restrictive to others as well. For example, I'm not as interested in who gets the first dig, but who gets the last dig (or better yet, who misses the last dig opportunity).

I thought publius had simple and easy to understand rules for the PTW Contest. His rules are also much shorter than mine. But if you scan the submitted entries, there are so many that were incorrectly formatted, something I'm sure that's a headache to deal with, especially with the massive numbers of submissions. That contest was my main impetus for perhaps coming up with simpler rules next time. As for the questions themselves, yours is just as good as any. The problem is, picking the questions. I could've done over/unders for all the stats -- kills, digs, assists, blocks, etc. For example, over/under 14 kills for Jolie Rasmussen. Or the manner in which a set would be won for each set -- kill, violation, error. Or the number of net violations. Or over/under for margin of victory for each set. Or it could be more basic like kill leader, dig leader, block leader, etc. Stuff like that. Could be anything.

This is a prototype under test. All first attempts are clumsy and you learn from them. I don't know how Fanasy League or PTW worked the first time around but I'm sure there were mistakes made and those mistakes were addressed over time. PTW is now 15 years, I think. Fantasy League is now in its 4th year, I believe.
I don't mind if this contest fails. It's the engineer in me. Design something, build it, and test it. Check results. Improve it.
Anyway, it's Day 2. This contest will be active until August 28.

For example, I'm not as interested in who gets the first dig, but who gets the last dig (or better yet, who misses the last dig opportunity). Also, it's not really the questions but the excitement from the randomness. Think Vegas. It's not really that interesting that a slot machine uses cherries, spades, grapes, tomatoes, the number "7", hearts, or clubs for the moving pictures (I don't know the term for those things.) Nor is it interesting that the craps table uses six-sided die vs. 32-sided die or that you bet "red" vs. "black" or "even" vs. "odd." The excitement is the randomness at play and your hope that you picked right. So, in volleyball, the excitement is that for any particular stat, you're hoping your predicted guess is right, not that it's the first dig or the last dig. I could be wrong. I guess the distinction is that in Vegas, you have the chance to win big $$$ which is a big draw, but you also have to spend $$$ to participate in each game. The "rush" may be the $$$ at play.

Not really interested in the contest overall and #'s 2-20, but just to stir things up, here's my #1: 1. Name the Hawaii starting lineup, specifically, S, OH, OH, OH, M, M, L. You need not differentiate between OH and OPP. (7 pts: 1 pt for each correct name) S = Iosia OH = Rasmussen OH = Westerberg OH = Hellvig M = Williams M = Igiede L = Okino

Mr Wolfgang are poster's allowed to pick San Diego to beat Hawaii? No need to call me "Mr." "Doctor" or "Master" or "Your Highness" is fine. And yes, you can pick whatever you want.
