So...this match is way behind schedule?

So...this match is way behind schedule? I'm not sure if it started late (I just got home and didn't have a chance to watch it live), but BYU won 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20).

Just located those scores from the UVU twitter. Apparently the live stats died early in the first set and no one cared about this match to report in. Haha. @zazu. Did this match really happen?!

Just got back for the Fieldhouse. Meh, thought they looked much better this morning. Just not as sharp. Maybe not a shock for the second match of the day.
A few more thoughts:
1. I thought Ballard-Nixon really played well, and the connection between Bower and Ballard-Nixon looked good.
2. The timing between Bower and Gneiting is definitely not there yet. It's better with Eschenberg, but I think Eschenberg's length allows for less precised timing and Eschenberg adjusts really well. Bower also struggled on her back sets tonight; she was behind the hitters a lot. Obviously, Bower is very talented but also very young so I think we've got to expect kinks and inconsistency like we saw across the two matches.
3. UVU did a good job passing (at least better than Boise St); particularly against Bower's serve.
4. This is not meant as a complaint because obviously she's great but I didn't think Lake's match was up to her usual standards.

Apparently the live stats died early in the first set and no one cared about this match to report in. Haha. @zazu . Did this match really happen?! Yes, I can verify that it did happen. It wasn't pretty, but it happened. Thanks for all your updates on the other WCC teams. I don't have a cell phone, so I am unable to follow anything when I attend the matches.
It was a lovely match from Taylen Ballard-Nixon--really lovely. So delighted for her. Her recovery from that freshman-year injury took much longer than most of us thought it would. I wondered at times last year if we'd ever see her reach that same level again. Tonight has been a long time coming for her. So wonderful to see.
And they really needed her tonight, as I think everyone else was rather blah. Except Eschenburg was pretty steady as usual. As easy as it was this afternoon, it was just that hard tonight. As Pelagius said, Bower is having a hard time setting Gneiting. The few times she got it right, it looked great. But it's so few and far between, that it's almost a shock when it actually works. Having her hit on the right side in that rotation when Bower and Miller are front row is just as problematic as it's ever been. Kate Grimmer never could get going. Back sets were bad from Bower in this match, and it affected Grimmer a lot. I don't think she was able to get into a good hitting rhythm at all. I had a moment towards the end of the second set where I wondered if Olmstead might bring in another setter, but I remembered back to LHE's first season and how much leeway she gave her to work it out and thought, nah, she'd have to be much worse to get pulled. I think her willingness to leave LHE in in tough spots paid dividends later on, and I think she'll be the same way with Bower if she can. Blocking is going to be an issue against Marquette though, so I'm curious to see what she does. Maybe we'll see a 6-2 at some point.
I credit UVU with really sharp, generally clean play. Their passing was very good. It was hard to believe it was the same team that passed so poorly against Marquette. Their defense was also excellent. Blocking was good. As much as Bower struggled tonight with her sets, I enjoyed watching both the UVU setters. Both set well. It's always a pleasure to see good setting. They were tough. BYU had to work hard for the victory. UVU was much better prepared for BYU than they were for Marquette, which isn't surprising considering the cross-town rivalry.
One other point I want to add. As good as BYU is at pancakes, I have the thought at times that it would be better if they moved their feet and got to the ball rather than going straight to the diving pancake. Sometimes it is not the best option to use. Pancakes are supposed to be last option, not the first. But that's just me from the cheap (or not) seats.

Very much, this.

A common reaction. I'm well used to it by now. Even my elderly parents now have cell phones, and what's more--they've been known to actually use them.

I just finished watching the replay and have some thoughts on this match:
So I didn’t think Bower was bad. After seeing the other comments, I watched her sets a lot more closely. She did have some sets that weren’t placed well (too far off the net, too low, etc.) that led to UVU blocks or weak hits, and she wasn’t as sharp overall as she was in the first match. But she had quite a few nice sets as well. And her serving was still good, as she had a couple aces and forced consecutive overpasses on the last two points of the first set. Overall, I thought she was just fine for her second career match.
After a bit of a slow start, Ballard-Nixon played extremely well in the third set, as Bower kept giving her the ball, and she kept crushing it. Overall, she had 12 kills on 23 swings and hit .435. She was arguably the best player on the floor.
Eschenberg was great again, as she had 11 kills and hit .444. She’s playing like an All-American, and not an honorable mention one either.
Miller had 12 kills, but her efficiency was down in this match, as she hit .226. I think she played better than the hitting percentage indicates, as some of her errors were due to less-than-ideal sets. She did have one kill when she dug a huge hit, and the ball went back over and landed on the line. This prompted Olmstead to smile and start clapping.
I thought Gneiting looked significantly better than she did in the first match, even if her stats weren’t great. She hit .000, but she had four kills. I’m not worried about her.
After playing so well in the first match, Grimmer had a rough time in this one, hitting negative. I think she’ll be fine as she and Bower get more experience.
Lake was steady as always. She didn’t have a lot of spectacular plays, but she was good.
BYU hit .225 as a team, which is lower than what they’re capable of. The defense was pretty good, as they held UVU to a solid .176. They definitely seem to be working out some kinks. In addition to getting comfortable with a new setter, there were some miscommunications that led to UVU points.
On one play in particular, Miller ripped an apparent kill off a UVU defender, but the ball hit a speaker and was still live. UVU managed to get the ball back over the net and scored while BYU was huddled up and celebrating. That was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in a volleyball match, though I doubt Olmstead was amused. BYU seemed uncharacteristically lackadaisical at times, and this play was emblematic of that.
As for UVU, they played fine, though I wasn’t *that* impressed. They had SIX (!) service errors, all long, in the first set alone. You just can’t do that against a team as talented as BYU. I will say that they did a good job of getting kills off tip shots, and their block was solid.
Finally, the broadcast itself was uncharacteristically sloppy at times. They had incorrect stats from the first match on multiple occasions and even identified Bower as a “libero.” Also, I really like Amy Gant, but at one point, she started talking about how UVU has been “climbing in the national rankings” and “becoming more and more of a powerhouse.” UVU had an RPI of 92 last season. I know she’s trying to be complimentary to UVU, but come on.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see how BYU fares in their first real test against Marquette.

I got to watch this game and was quite impressed with Ballard. She’s going to be really good by end of season if she continues to develop. There were a couple kills where she went well above the block. It’s interesting that both she and McKenna had the same brace on the same leg, in addition to them both being 6’2, blonde and similar build. I got them mixed up a couple of times.
Regarding the setter, I thought she was pretty composed and played well considering she’s a freshman. She’s got a good vertical, but she’s only 5’7, and will be a big liability on the block against stronger teams.

Her sister Morgan, a DS, is the one who is 5'7". She's a little undersized either way, but Lyndie Haddock-Eppich was only an inch taller and was the best blocking setter in the country last season. I think she is just tall enough that she'll be okay.
