Today I went to watch USA training session opened to fans in Mishima, Japan. The roster: Christenson, Ma'a, Tuaniga, Saeta Anderson, Patch, Shaw Russell, Jaeschke, Muagututia, DeFalco, B. Sander Smith, Holt, Jendryk, Stahl E. Shoji But Christenson hardly trained and Speraw said Christenson hurt his back.. How fun, vbbear! Thanks for the update. We might be seeing a lot of Ma’a in the World Cup if they’re cautious with Micah C. Roster is not a surprise at all...except no Kawika Shoji. Hmmmm. Oh, and also thought we might see Dagostino in Japan. I will admit I am surprised to see some of these guys there...and in some cases, pleasantly surprised.

Now everyone is comfirmed, including B Sander. Dagostino is surprisingly no show. Do they really need Shoji to play all 11 games, including against 2 African teams? Tuaniga is surprising as well

What happens when/if E. Shoji retires after Tokyo? It would have been better to get Dagostino more reps. This is a mistake. He must have been left off so Speraw can bring 3 setters or 5 outsides. I don't see three opposites being a thing.

“The stakes are less. I do think this is a great opportunity to play a challenging tournament with guys competing for Olympic spots next year.”
“The last time we went through this event, we played starters every match,” Speraw said. “This one, because we’re a little older, I will have to make more aggressive roster decisions. We will have the opportunity to look at guys who haven’t played a lot this summer.”

Well gee whiz. Somehow that practice player made this roster. Good thing he stayed back from the Norceca to train with the A team.

Good luck to the team

Thanks for posting, hanson!
Still a little surprised Dagostino is not there. Shoji will have to do it all on his own.
Good for James Shaw!!! Just throwing this out there (knowing I could be completely wrong) - does this maybe give some insight into Matt Anderson's plans post-2020 and needing to see other OPPs? Thought they might bring 5 OHs with some of the issues/injuries at that position this summer. Must mean good news on Russell/Jaeschke.
Looking forward to the Stahl/Jendryk and Muagututia/DeFalco battles for those last roster spots in Tokyo.

I'm just guessing here, but to me it's not great news for the four OH's. This seems more precautionary to me. Bringing three OPP's allows for Anderson to move to OH when/if Russell/Jaeschke need matches off, and having to depend on the non-terminal Muagututia and the seemingly erratic DeFalco is probably concerning for Speraw. Therefore, I don't think this has anything to do with Anderson playing or not playing for USA post Tokyo. Who are they going to put the libero uniform on each match? One of the setters? One of the middles? I am disappointed Dagostino is not there. This seemed like it would have been a good tournament to bring a second libero, and to allow Shoji to take a day or two off.

That could very well be as well. Especially missing Sander. Adding Anderson then gives you three OHs to depend on and gives Patch some needed reps. 100% agree on Dagostino. A while glad to see Saeta make the roster...do they really need a serving specialist over a true second Libero?

Argentina and Italy sent their B teams to Japan, Canada as well I guess. Brazil has everyone except Wallace. Poland and Russia unclear, both bot eliminated earlier than they expected at Euro Championships, so they are more likely to send full squads to Japan.
Anyway, USA, Brazil, Poland and Russia, top 4 teams will contend for gold. However, it is very likely that nobody will be a clean winner by beating everyone else.
Last time in 2015 we were 10-1 with Italy and Poland (USA beat Italy, Italy beat Poland, Poland beat USA) and won because we lost two fewer sets.

Last time in 2015 we were 10-1 with Italy and Poland (USA beat Italy, Italy beat Poland, Poland beat USA) and won because we lost two fewer sets. That was a fun tournament and we got some help from Italy, Iran, and Argentina. Iran taking Poland to five helped because it only gave them 2 points for the win. Argentina taking Italy to five did the same thing. Though going into the last day of the competition we were behind Poland and needed help from Italy to at least take them to five. We had to turn around and beat Argentina, who knocked us out of the WCH the year before. We went into that last match already knowing that Italy got the job done and had booked their spot to the Olympics. I remember E. Shoji saving a ball over his head that ended up falling for a kill late in the fourth set. I know that Matt Anderson was named MVP, but Aaron Russell really came into his own that tournament. The one drawback for that tournament was that Brazil was not there since they didn't need to qualify for the Olympics.
