Another great match to start the year. So many close games going to extra points or decided by just 2 or 3. Neither team looked remarkably sharp but Penn State going toe to toe with Stanford despite minimal production on the left was impressive. Cathay in particular really struggled. Good athlete but lacks control, she'll get better with time. I liked what I saw from their sub in g1 who came in and ripped a kill right off the bat.
Blossom overall I thought looked really solid out there. I liked her toughness and aggressive middle sets even if some were too forced. Based on what I saw today, Russ probably should've started her over Weiskircher last year. Hord is an animal, she looks like a 1st Team AA this year and should be a top middle in the nation. Would love to see her develop a slide attack.
Stanford was steady. Kipp looks good on the pin, she isnt as powerful as Plummer (no one is) but her contact point is SO high. Fitz had a good game too and Gates looked more fluid and comfortable than she did against Texas.
They're very good but not machine-like compared to the Penn State teams with Hodge/Glass. Honestly they're a lot more beatable than I anticipated coming into the season. Glad we get to watch them play a brutal schedule and see some competitive volleyball to start the year.

I think Parker got lucky on several of the low-seam swings she took tonight. Stanford's blocking hasn't been great yet this year, and they're often caught not pressed over the net, which allowed Parker's swings to dribble down the net.

Yes but if they wanna win championships, they really need an OH that score out of system Mac May transfers for her senior season. Her on PSU will be an upgrade. Since UCLA took away PSU's top recruit, this makes a perfect sense

Mac may would start in any team in the country right now. She could be a first or second team all American if she was in a top team. Nebraska couldn't stop her 10 ft off the net

So the give Plummer a kill for that, but an attacking error for Parker's attempt to save the dig in the first set? lol That was a Plummer kill? I can't- Of course it was a bump kill!

Good match for both teams but Penn States can be dangerous come tournament time. They just need a top notch OH then they'll be very good. I think this match proved that Penn State DOESN'T need a "top notch OH" to be very good (which is what everyone thought). This may have been in 4, but this was a very very close match. Parker (who plays more like an OH than a RS), Hord and Gray are all elite hitters, and Blossom was the better setter on the court tonight. They're still a top 4 team IMO, and thus I'd classify them as "very good." Based off statements he’s made, I think Rose himself may disagree with you. The OH spot is real weak RN. Regardless, they did better than I expected tonight.

I would have liked to see Gates / Campbell commit a bit more on Hord and take their chances on the LS with Cathey / Gorrell 1-on-1. When Stanford's MB committed, they got some touches and were able to transition, particularly later in the 3rd / 4th. Hord just gets up so damn high.
But a good warm-up for Taylor Morgan tomorrow night.
