I guess all that time Imoco spent practicing while everyone else was quarantining paid off. Did Hill or Ogbogu ever publicly apologize (on social media or wherever) for their participation in that photograph now that their country leads the world in total infections and will soon lead in total deaths? i dont think so... they (hill + unnamed teammates) got busted in italy for breaking the quarantine/isolation? rules by being in a park on a sunny day, not sure if that was before or after the photograph fiasco but still yikes!

Wow... how do I dislike this photo ugh When was this photo taken? Maybe they didn't realize the severity of the outbreak at the time. Not excusing their behavior, but timing could make it a little more understandable.

I saw Mitchem was still in Italy on Instagram as of last week. It could have been an old photo but I think she's still there. Mitchem in US, her dog in Italy.

Not excusing their behavior, but timing could make it a little more understandable. I believe it was taken in late february after their away quarterfinals match that was postponed due to the early outbreak in Italy. They were just trying to make a serious situation humorous at the time. They also didn't know how bad it would get worldwide at the time. I believe the team leaders all gathered on Instagram and apologized for the photo. Edit: See @avid post below for the corrected date.

Many epidemiologists didn't quite realised the severity of the situation at that time (I even know some of them), let alone some volleyball players (and despite our modern tendency to raise public figures to impossibly high standards and expectations, that's all they are). The photo was ill-advised, but to demand an apology is just a manifestation of toxicity of certain aspects of modern civilisation.

On March 4th in Italy: 3,089 total cases, 587 new cases 107 total deaths 28 new deaths. Italy closed all schools and universities, and all public sporting events.
Sure, just "ill-advised."

Just 6 days prior to this photo, one of the leading allergologist and pulmonologist in my country gave an interview on a TV channel with national frequency in which he said the viral outbreak is in it's final stages and advised women to use this opportunity to go shopping for cheap in Milan. He was subsequently appointed in the national emergency staff for COVID-19 outbreak.

He was subsequently appointed in the national emergency staff for COVID-19 outbreak. Also, since I'm an editor in medical journal, I'm in touch with doctors of many different fields and specialties, and I distinctly remember that almost down to the day I had to start to work from home (March 12th), most pulmonologists and epidemiologists I've spoken to were confident that, while the outbreak is not near it's end, that it won't be worse than swine flu pandemic. So while that pulmonologist I mentioned above might have been an extreme case (and one that used sexist language, to boot), the blindness to the seriousness of the situation was widely shared in medical community, let alone in general population. That is, after all, one of the main reasons why we have come to this.

No one is arguing that the world (especially the United States and Italy) responded well to the initial stages of the virus. You're missing the point.
In Italy, there were 107 (at least) victims of this disease on March 4th alone (only counting deaths). 79 victims the day before. 52 the day before that. As of March 4th, there were 3,285 global deaths. These numbers generally were available to the public, and the Imoco volleyball team (many of whom also had connections with players in Asia). It doesn't matter if people thought the virus was under control - this photo made a mockery of the innocent victims who were dying everyday from COVID-19. If they were mocking a school shooting, or train crash, or terrorist attack, in which 107 people died, no one would be questioning the insensitivity of the photo. Why is a fatal virus different?
If you fail to see how the photo was insensitive to victims of the pandemic, our conversation probably ends here, but to conflate calling these players out for their insensitivity with "[the] toxicity of certain aspects of modern civilisation" is transparently political, baseless and absurd.
