Sonja has had a very nice pro career. She happened to come up in college through a very talent-packed era; it was just really hard to stand out at that time just because there were some real juggernaut teams then. She is very good and a complete player, which is why she has outlasted a lot of players with better name recognition. Great left side blocker, tenacious defender, and a very nasty line hit. Obviously not quite on the level of Tom / Larson to make the NT A-team and she didn't get into the fold with the NT at the time which probably hurt development opportunities.
I think if she were coming up nowadays she would have better club and NT opportunities. She didn't get great club opportunities right off the bat (also the financial crisis had things unsettled for Americans below the elite tier).

I agree with C4ndlelight. Would like to add a bit more, I think volleyball fans should know who she is. She is the most under rated player in the world in My opinion.
Sonja was one of the best Outsides in the loaded PAC 10 (Best Conference at the time). I think she was under valued because she played at Oregon before they were really on the national scene. She is still their all time leading Scorer. Before she arrived Oregon was 1-19 in conference. Sonja came and took the Ducks to 4 straight tournament appearances. She changed that program.
Her first year as a pro she played in France and was the top scorer in the league. From there She has played in Turkey 3 times, China 3 times, Russia, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Romania, and Puerto Rico. She has consistently been in the top 10 in her pro leagues in Scoring and Passing.
It's a shame she didn't get more of a chance from Karch. I remember watching a USA scrimmage a few years ago and it was a battle between MBH and Sonja. Each had close to 20 points and hit near 500. USA has so much talent at that position. I think Karch chose to invest in developing younger players rather than taking a chance on Sonja at an older age (27 or 28 at the time). Her style is very much like Jordan and Logan.
Last year Sonja's team played Galatasaray in the CEV Cup quarterfinals. Sonja's team won, and she out played Hande Baladin, who is now her team mate. We will see who plays, but Sonja is a good insurance policy for Eczacibasi.
Don't underestimate this girl! Go Sonja!

She made a roster for something in like 2014 I believe. Montreux maybe? I remember seeing her

I don’t blame Hugh for choosing at that time to invest in Hodge, Larson, Richards, Klineman, Pressley, etc. (who were just some really amazing athletes) but I think we would be thinking about Newcombe differently if she had gotten more opportunities earlier or if the National Team had been looking at as broad of a player base as they do now. I hope she goes into coaching. Very smart player.

Fenerbahce's schedule over the next two weeks will be quite daunting.
2/6 vs. Eczacibasi Vitra (CEV CHLeague Leg 5) 2/8 vs. Galatasaray (VVSL) Fen. lost to them 3-1 in the first half of the season. 2/12 vs. Vakifbank (VVSL) Fen. swept them 3-0 in the first half of the season. 2/15 vs. Eczacibasi Vitra (VVSL) Fen. lost to them 3-2 in the first half of the season and in the first leg of the CEV CHLeague.
If they can pull off some wins over these next two weeks they will advance to 2nd in their domestic league and will likely be the pool winners in the CHLeague if they beat Ecz. Vitra 3-0 or 3-1.
Huge moments ahead for them and for Kelsey and Jordan T. If Mihajlovic keeps falling apart on serve receive and if Vargas is back in form, we could see Thompson playing on the left which would be INSANE :-)......I'm here for it!

JT sort of struggling offensively but her defense is on point. how has her blocking been? That's her weakest area of her game imo

In case anyone cares, Fenerbahce is currently playing Vakifbank and Thompson is playing as an OH! Fener is up 12-10 in set 1.

Vakifbank more or less crushes Fenerbahce in set 2, though the score was like 25-18. Vakifbank's middles are WAY better than Fener's today. They're touching EVERYTHING on the block and Fenerbahce is getting nothing from the block.
