Using CGI to make Gong Li younger for Lang Ping’s playing years ala “The Irishman” will be costly I think, although they may be banking on this movie making a lot of money in China. Is that the final trailer? if it is then it doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence, hopefully I’m wrong. Idk if movie trailers really matter to the Chinese market the way American consumers care for them. I think the movie’s subject alone (assuming Lang Ping is still huge in China) will be enough to earn this movie tons of money. I was mostly referring to the quality of the film based off the trailer, it seems saccharine for my taste.

As for this film, hard to say based on these two brief trailers. The Chinese are not known for being overly sentimental in their movie taste. I'll say this, the brutal training scenes are pretty accurate for that time period, based on my knowledge of Chinese volleyball. And the volleyball scenes look pretty legit. Of course, the movie could suck, although that would be based more on it being propagandistic than being chessy. Peter Chan have made some good movies before, but he is under the thumb of mainland Chinese censors on this film, who dictate the final cut, sometimes to the detriment of the film.

Looking at the trailer again, it's not only Zhu Ting on set, I think I also saw Yan Ni as well and Ting Xia (the setter). I think they are enlisting the whole NT for the film.

Clearly, Meryl Streep will play Lang Ping, both younger playing days and older coaching days. Streep can do anything. Funny you picked Meryl for this. Getting Gong Li to play you in a Chinese film is like getting Meryl Streep to play you in Hollywood, I think.

Here's a photo of Zhu from her Weibo page (the Chinese version of Facebook) showing her prepping for her scene in the movie with her ex-teammate Xu Yunli.

Yeah maybe it was only the trailer that’s “too sweet”, I’ve seen lots of movies that the trailer was horrid, IMO, and the movie was fantastic (Toy Story 4, for example). When is the supposed release date? No matter how this turns out I think I’d still want to watch it.

Gong Li has actually been called the "Meryl Streep of China" by directors Michael Mann and Rob Marshall: www.imdb.com/name/nm0000084/bio

I believe (if my shaky Chinese is correct) it would be Chinese New Year, which is sometime around January 2020.

I wonder how Ziyi would’ve fared if she kept on her momentum from Memoirs? (Still bitter about that snub from the Academy) I’m going off-topic so I’ll stop now, haha!

I have seen some Gong Li movies. Here are her highlight reels: Memoirs of a Geisha: Raise the Red Lantern: Terra-Cotta Warrior:

She was really great as “Hatsumomo” (though the controversy of Marshall casting Chinese actresses as “geisha” hurt it’s chances during the awards run). The dynamic between her and Ziyi was amazing.
Looking at her filmography I feel like I haven’t watched enough of her movies, I saw her Volvi cup winning role though. And I saw on wiki that the movie is titled “Chinese Women Volleyball”? I hope that’s not the final working title.

That’s good to know, cos’ that title is just silly! I don't know what the title will be, I just hope it will be better than the direct translation we got so far. Speaking of Asian films and TV series, they do seem to have the most volleyball-themed movies and shows. In Thailand you have the "Iron Ladies", about a group of gay men playing volleyball and fighting prejudice at the same time: In Japan, you have anime and live-action drama of volleyball related series: Of course, the most famous is the classic anime "Attack No.1": They even had a modern retelling of the story with live-action drama starring Japanese actress Ueto Aya:
