At the 44 minute mark, Hawaii had just lost two long rallies where the ball crossed the net I think 15 times and 13 times. In the second rally, Norene tripped over her own feet causing Amber to make a diving save and Rika sent it over on her knees. While the crew was mopping the floors after the point they showed the faces of the players and I don't think I've ever seen such exhaustion when it's only the middle of the second set. No smiles, no encouraging chatter, just wiping the sweat off their faces with dead eyes, trying to recover for the next point. Incredible grit for them to push through and take the set. Like I said last night, Iosia looked flushed.

What was the yellow card about? USD coach was questioning every points given to Hawaii on that portion of the match. Seems like she was just killing the momentum. I think the play being argued was that the R1 should have called Igiede for a lift or throw of a ball she hit over that she 1st contacted at a high point behind her head. It was non-reviewable, so the vociferous nature of the argument late in the 3rd set wasn't appreciated by the R1. I think Hawai'i had argued a similar call against Turner early in the set with the R2, when Turner appeared to catch a ball down around her armpit then proceeded to push it up and over the net, and in real time it also looked liked a double contact of ball not blocked, although video showed it wasn't double contact but was clearly a lift. The richness of San Diego arguing long and hard about Igiede's play which wasn't nearly as egregious as Turner's, I presume wasn't lost on the R1.

I do have to comment on one thing. Watching both the USD and Wahine post match interviews, coach Petrie is so articulate and well spoken. Very nice how she formulates her responses to the questions. Coach RAM is such a Tita with her answer. Real local kine pidgin. Lol! 😂

Has anyone found the exact play where rika yells you’re easy lol Rally starts at 1:07:30 in the replay. I'm using Grado reference headphones and I wasn't expecting her intimidation shout to be so respectable, pleasantly surprised. This Okino's very welcome to start against Nebraska.

Has anyone found the exact play where rika yells you’re easy lol I've been looking and still no luck I think it's at about 14-12 in the third set when the San Diego setter shoots the ball to the back corner and Rika is their and easily picks up the ball.

Katie Lukes, who is their kill leader, and Lauren Turner both return next season, along with Frohling, so their offense will be intact. I think their setter will be hard to replace, she was fantastic. She really struggled in this match against Hawai'i, however. San Diego was forced out of system a lot, no doubt, but she had a lot of bad sets and questionable decisions on reasonably in-system plays as well. Newsome was key to the team winning the conference title this year. By running a 5-1, the coaches enabled Newsome’s front row attack (which shone). It also allowed her to build good chemistry with the other starters for a smoother and more efficient offence than in a 6-2, which the coaches had experimented with early on unsuccessfully (besides, no second right side option better than Frohling either.) Unfortunately, with Hawai’i, we didn’t get to see Newsome at her best on the attack and running a potent quick offence - props to Hawaii for this situation. Somebody suggested that maybe the coaches might have told her to “play it slow and safe” but I can’t see this as it was not their style all season. Anyway, great setter and really enjoyed watching her play this season.

San Diego is still going to be incredibly good next season. Lukes, Fayad, Turner, Frohling, and Wiblin are all returning, along with Tastad and Benbow in the back row. Madill struggled a bit this season when she played in the 6-2, but she definitely is a capable setter, and we have all see how San Diego has been able to train their setters into high quality players over the course of their careers (ex. Newsome, Gengenbacher). I don't know who they have recruited in their incoming class, but hopefully they have some good freshman coming in. They should definitely be the favorite to win the WCC again next year and could see them potentially becoming a Top 16 seed next season depending on how well Madill develops as a setter and if they can replace Jacobsen's production in the middle. Congrats to Hawaii! I hope they take down Nebraska next weekend! This Hawaii team is just so fun to watch and you can't help but root for them. Agree that for SD to be as successful again in conference play next year, setter and middle positions need to be replaced successfully. On the positive side, most of the team will have several years of tournament experience under their belts, with 4 potential starters having played in the Sweet 16 run last season including setter Madill. She’ll need to settle in next year and find her rhythm running the offence for USD to be successful. But with less starting experience than Newsome, this might be a work in progress for the junior next year. Replacing Jacobsen in the middle will be tough. However, the team apparently has two freshmen middles coming in next season and Turner will only get better with time. Also, May is a senior next year - will she step up as a middle? Anyway, with all the current hitters returning, the offence should remain potent. Hopefully the team can develop more with tough serving, as this is certainly an area of opportunity.

Lol! 😂 With all due respect to the Hawaii reporter, Hawaii did NOT post the ‘highest’ attendance either of the two nights of the first or second rounds. . .that would be Nebraska. On the mainland we call that #FakeNEWS. 1st round Hawaii- 7818 Nebraska- 8204 2nd Round Hawaii- 8058 Nebraska- 8091 Carry on
