It's amusing to see several posters suggest that this has been blown out of proportion because it involves Texas. If this was Russ Rose and PSU, it would be just as big. Every bit as big if it had been Wisconsin or Stanford. If it was Nebraska, ProBoards servers would have melted by now. I think it's amusing that it's only "big" on Volleytalk. There is virtually no coverage of this incident in the sports media or on social media, aside from a brief ESPN post that never suggests Bell did anything untoward. Granted, this speaks more to the lack of attention volleyball gets in general (I'm sure that if, say, Duke had done this in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, it would have gotten more coverage), but still. This is an excellent point. I can only imagine an NCAA March Madness game where the favorite team (say, Duke) is losing, or heading into overtime, and a former player who is a current pro pops onto the floor to give a little 'pep talk' to the players in the huddle. There would be front page outrage!

This is how ESPN reported it on their website: What the heck are coaches doing during a match that they require a timeout to convene? Why aren't coaches prepared BEFORE the timeout so they don't waste previous time? That's a pretty common practice. An assistant may see something that the HC didn't pick up on. The HC is just getting quick feedback.

Don't say that to the masses on here.

I’m pretty sure most of us just want to ensure that this doesn’t set precedent for anyone to just waltz up to the bench, be it a rando or a brilliant tactician. And that Texas / whoever let her go to the bench knows what they did was wrong. You too btw since your judgement is clouded

tomclen this thread has 36 pages and has eclipsed the Carlson thread. It has action, drama, everything you need except it's missing an OCC meme to capture the subject. Can you make that happen? Thanks in advance! lol

It’s women’s volleyball. Nobody cares If that is really true, what are you doing posting here? For that matter, why do 15,000 people show up to the Final Four?

That's a pretty common practice. An assistant may see something that the HC didn't pick up on. The HC is just getting quick feedback. The assistant is right there on the bench. There's no need to wait for a timeout to convey, or to convene. It's called walking and chewing gum at the same time

I understand it is common, I just don't understand why. I definitely understand specialty coaches breaking out players into small groups during a timeout. I don't understand why the coaches have not been talking all match and are not already prepared for the timeout. If you get to the point that your team needs a timeout, the coaches should have been talking about the issues and remedies for several plays at least. It is not a surprise. It honestly seems like a "lazy" practice to me, not well thought out and not efficient. Here is my really bad analogy: A NASCAR pit crew doesn't wait until the car pulls into the pit to discuss what they are going to service, how, and which team member is doing exactly what. Why don't volleyball coaches seem prepared at all when they pull their teams in for a pit stop? NASCAR teams have headsets where they can all talk as each member is doing their job. NCAA volleyball teams are not permitted to use headsets, so as the game is going on each coach is working on their job, and there isn't always a lot of time for the staff to be talking about everything. Plus a NASCAR pit stop is a race to get out of the pit as fast as possible. NCAA volleyball timeouts last an ETERNITY! There is only so much you can tell the players before info starts leaking out their other ear (Kelly Bundy) and way too much time available. So the coaches have time to get together for a few seconds to decide what info is most important to pass along.
