it has been fun watching Raina and Bruna starting to hit out of the back row - Bruna in particular hitting over the setter's front row position, giving us 3 hitters when Brown is in the front row. As it becomes more effective it will protect our left side pin hitter. Raina against a single block on the left side is deadly. Question - and assuming Ellie returns to pre-ACL form, should Bruna become more effective from back right how does that impact who plays left and opposite? I'm under the impression Maddie is our most-likely opposite. Bruna and Raina will be our OH’s in the Fall. Aug/Sept iis 5-6 months away and no way Ellie will be back from an ACL surgery. You dont want to rush her and risk ending her volleyba career before it even starts.

So is there any chance of rescheduling our missed matches?

This is a link to News-Gazette Sports Talk podcasts. The relevant one is from 3/24/21 that includes an interview with Chris Tamas. The portion with Chris Tamas begins at the 30:40 mark. Of interest is an indication that a couple of graduating players may return pending decisions regarding grad schools. Specific individuals were not mentioned and Megan Cooney was not in the discussion regarding the Seniors (not sure why, it may have been just an oversight). The relevant portion begins at 32:35. www.news-gazette.com/podcasts/sportstalk-with-scott-beatty/

That's an interesting wrinkle about the potential for one or more of those three seniors to return! Here's a *rough* transcription of that section so we can parse out Tamas's words in writing: Pod Host: "Seniors are going to be honored this weekend. Is it this similar deal where some of them may decide later if they want to come back or are the ones you're honoring along with Mica Allison... is it a thing where they're done?" Tamas: "You're correct. There are still some decisions to be made. We're going to honor them all just in case. But we've got some people waiting on grad schools and whatnot, so I'd rather err on the side of honoring them than not having it done correctly. So we'll honor them this weekend and we may see a couple of them return in the future." The pod host then prompts Tamas about Bruder and Hollowell but doesn't ask about Cooney. My interpretation of Tamas's words is that a Bruder return is possible but he didn't use similar language about Hollowell. If they aren't taking up one of our scholarships, I'd think it's kind of "the more the merrier" type situation and not much of a financial hit to the program.

If Megan Cooney comes back that would be great news. It would mean that next year’s lineup may well look like this past weekend with the addition of a couple of defensive specialists helping to shore up an area of need this year. It may also make it easier to redshirt the outside/middle in the new recruiting class. And there still may be an opportunity to pick up a transfer with Mica Allison’s scholarship.
I would think that there would be little in regard to career concerns for players choosing to use their extra eligibility. If someone elects to pick up a master degree-great! Even if someone decides just to take an extra semester to pick up some additional classes and play vball that also seems fine. After a pandemic , in a job interview, I would doubt that the response from an interviewer would be much different than-sounds great, I would have done the same thing myself.
It will be interesting to see how many players come back. That will have a big effect on the competitive environment next year.

Just listened to the podcast. I think the interviewer simply forgot Cooney is a senior. He asked Tamas about his two seniors, Bruder and Hollowell, and Mica. I don’t know if Cooney is thinking about another year, but she would sure be welcome. Having said all of that, and having enjoyed the heck out of college, I was so ready to move on after four years there is no way I would stay even a semester to play a sport.

If a senior is excited about her career field and is anxious to go out and make some money, good for her. If a player thinks it might be fun and/or useful for her career to return for an extra semester, it is nice that the option is there and scholarship money is being made available.
One of the interesting things about an option year is how it might affect career record books. Will there be a career asterisk attached to records or might it be decided that if a player uses her option year that the pandemic year stats are not counted. The latter I think is most fair.
For example, it appears that Raina Terry is on course to accumulate about 200 kills this year. She is heading into next year likely to be one of the primary attack options.
I checked the career kill stats numbers.
1. Jocelynn Birks 1,972
2. Laura DeBruler 1,833
3. Jacqueline Quade 1791
4. Mary Eggers 1,774
5. Mary Coleman 1,707
6. Nancy Brookhart 1,669
7. Rachel VanMeter 1,662
8. Tracey Marshall 1,657
9. Michelle Bartsch 1,644
10. Bridget Boyle 1,484
11. Liz McMahon 1,443
Jacqueline Quade’s four year kill totals were.
2016-304
2017-430
2018-560
2019-497
Total-1791
An extra 200 kills gives a nice head start on the chance to make the career top ten list. And the preparation of the pandemic year gives a nice head start into the return to normal year. Will be interesting to see how they decide to handle this re career records. Maybe it has already been decided. I don’t know.

I forgot that Terry was initially committed to IU. Nice for her to get that win. Also with Mica's departure that leaves us with more options and we can hopefully land a tranfer DS. Also this year doesnt count? Does all the players get another year of elegibility due to covid?

As I understand, this year does not count against four years in five. I don’t know if extending scholarships for graduated seniors increases the number of scholarships available for a team. If Cooney stays, for example, does that give Illinois 13 volleyball scholarships? Maybe not significant in volleyball, but over 15 Illini football players are returning who otherwise would be out of eligibility. Does that take away from the number of scholarships available to freshmen? A large number of athletes otherwise out of eligibility are transferring to other schools to play. What does that do to scholarship numbers?
UofIlliniVBFan asked about numbers for practice scrimmages. Most schools use male student managers to fill out those scrimmages. My son-in-law was a women’s volleyball manager at an SEC school. A big part of his job was to practice with the team.
Players won’t start hitting the transfer portal until after the season. That is when recruiting will go up for grabs.
