I don’t think so. It was my understanding that all participants in a traditionally fall sport would not have this year counted against their eligibility. Individual conferences are not required to provide the extra year of eligibility. If the school chooses to afford it, the returning senior scholarship does not count against the scholarship limit imposed by the NCAA. Cooney would give Illinois 13 available scholarships for 2021. Certain academic criteria must be satisfied. I suspect that the extra scholarships created by non-senior athletes will cause scholarship limits to be adjusted for as long as athletes who did not lose a year of eligibility are still in school and eligible, subject to each school’s ability to pay for the extra scholarships. Otherwise at some point incoming first year students would not have as many scholarships as would normally be available, a situation that would be unfair to that year’s student/athletes.

Im curious about Ellie. Red shirt - her freshman year, this year doesn't count and does she apply for medical redshirt in the fall. Would she just play her senior year?? Maybe 2 years of Grad school???

Raina was robbed! Would have been cool for her to get the national recognition she deserves. She's getting her due among VTers and anyone who's seen her play this season knows she's on the shortlist of the best freshmen. The BIG All-freshman team listed 2 OHs - Mruzik and Landfair. Which one gets bumped for Terry?Terry had a very successful debut freshman season; one of the best that I remember. I had the same thought as vball778: There were eight players named to the All-Freshmen team last year, and this year all three of the OH in question are deserving (Raina, Landfair, and Mruzik). If it were limited to two OH, I'd drop Mruzik in favor of Raina but that's no knock against Mruzik. She was Michigan's primary attack option, taking the most swings of any Wolverine and delivering 3.54 kills/set at a .157 clip. She had two inexperienced setters (a freshman and a sophomore who didn't set much last year, playing behind senior Mackenzi Welsh) and I think Michigan's passing wasn't super consistent so she was getting a lot of out of system balls. She played six rotations and was a threat out of the back row. She's got good shot range from the games I saw and plays with a lot of confidence. Michigan's season was chaotic with many cancellations and some covid cases in the program (including both of their main coaches). She's already a force and will only get better as things stabilize and Michigan's setter(s) and passing improve. Us Illini fans all saw Raina this season so no real need to go at length describing her play but her season stats are 3.09 kills/set at .190. Those stats include the first three matches of the year when she was playing out of position at OPP in three rotations. When Ellie tore her ACL in the fourth match of the season, Raina stepped up and took the reins playing six rotations OH the rest of the year. If we compare only Raina's stats as a six rotation OH to Mruzik's, she widens the hitting % gap and narrows Mruzik's kills/set lead: Raina had 3.32 kills/set at .202 as an OH. Those are only two stats but they're the main offensive ones and I'm already long-winded. Both had impressive freshman seasons but I'd take Raina.

Someone in the transfer thread said Emily is playing a grad year at Ball State. Good for her! Also Marriah Buss is in the portal. She was a big time recruit. Now Instagram confirmed on the transfer thread! Congrats to Emily on her next chapter, continuing her academic and volleyball career! https://www.instagram.com/p/CNdaGsIpWcj

The Cardinals are getting a player with size (she always looked taller than her listed 6'3" to me) and great training. Hollowell is an ultimate teammate with a great attitude. I look forward to seeing how Emily and the Cards fare next season!

Mosher is so good. She was the best player in the gym at the Winter Champs Qualifier in Indy. She did every skill. It will be fun to watch her at Illinois.
