This is assuming that SD kids want to stay in SD. Sort of boggles my mind anyone would want to leave San Diego............. I agree, though it's interesting that USD's current roster has only one player from San Diego County.

Not to mention recruiting for USD just got a little tougher as SDSU has become another attractive option for the SD area and given his club influence in the area should garner some top players. Not necessarily recruiting the same kids because the academics are higher at USD. Totally. And why choose a large public university if you have the option to attend an exclusive private university with a gorgeous campus.

I think most athletes choose a school based on a combination of the school, the coaching staff and, if they know what field they want to study, do they have what they want to major in. Maybe they want a larger school with a better football or basketball experience...... The point is with a good coach now SDSU will draw players that may not have considered them before, ones that might have only thought of USD as an option. The culture of a program will draw more girls than the academics of a school with the exception of those elite universities that are obvious. I guess time will tell.

Plus the big difference compared to USC-UCLA, you are talking about two different conferences. Great hire for San Diego State, would be great to see them elevate the program.

I’d be shocked if he did. I think he loves where he is and the freedom that being an assistant has. If his career is anything like mine has been (not volleyball related), what I WANT changes over the years depending on 1) time I want to spend at/near home, 2) boredom, 3) people I like working with moving on to a different employer, 4) finding a different aspect of my career becoming more interesting to me.
Then, sometimes, there is just that little voice saying: "I think you would be good at that new challenge", even if you're happy where you are.
I'm guessing Hilliard was motivated by the challenge aspect.

This makes a lot of sense to me (I would presume he's also getting a pay increase), and honestly, if it doesn't work out, he can probably go back to San Diego to be an assistant again. This seems like a move that has quite a bit of upside and not much downside for Hilliard, at least from my perspective.

Not necessarily recruiting the same kids because the academics are higher at USD. USD’s academic profile isn’t particularly notable, and it isn’t a difficult school to get into as long as you’ve got the $$ for tuition. SDSU’s acceptance rate is considerably lower than USD’s. Great views, though. At any rate, there’s no reason Hilliard wouldn’t pursue the same kids as Jen.

Have been to USD during college visits. I do think it is easier to get into than SDSU. However, I don't think the difference is enough to impact athletic scholarship admission in the slightest, but could affect walkons a little.
USD is a really, really chill campus. No crowds. No lines. Small class sizes. Reminded me a little of a SMU, but a little smaller b/c SMU has a good % of graduate students and USD less so.

Probably not that surprising, considering that USD's tuition is ~$50K/year, while SDSU is ~$7500 for residents and under $20k for non-residents.

Look at the student profile comparisons: USD SDSU SAT: 1275 1212 ACT: 28 25 GPA: 3.9 3.73 SDSU is technically more selective, because they their acceptance rates are lower. That has more to do with sheer volume of applications vs room in the incoming class. However, the student academic profile is actually higher at USD.
