I'll believe it when I see it, this passing of the guard thing. The OP could have written the same post after 2010, when the PSU roster of 1st team AAs finally left the scene. And what happened? The next year, 2011, indeed, was a year in which the the big 4 were also-runs. But then: it was nothing but Texas, PSU, Nebraska, and Stanford cutting down that darn net. 8 years in a row. They still recruit better than anyone. This year was about as good as someone like me can hope for: only 1 of the four in the FF.

It's been 15 years since a new team won the title. Now, 6 times in the past ten years, a challenger has made the final and tried to win their first NC, but they've failed every single time, with only one of the six even winning two sets. Perhaps one of the contenders will FINALLY break through and win a title in the next couple years, but the stranglehold that UT, PSU, Stanford, and Nebraska have on NCAA volleyball doesnt seem to be ending anytime soon imo.

I'm not sure I would have PSU in this group considered having a 'stranglehold'. It has been 6 years since they've won a title and they don't appear to be accumulating the elite talent it once did. If there is one team that is being considered part of a changing of the guard I think it would have to be them.

They are still definitely in this group.

Not to be a Donnie Downer, as much as I loved the Baylor 2019 team I am unsure of it’s future starting in 2021 based on their commitment lineup that class through class of 2022. They still have Press for 2020 and strong transfer talent so I think they will hold steady for another year but beyond that the future is unclear. It will be interesting to see how these classes pan out since they were mostly or perhaps entirely committed before the girls even started high school.

You do understand I was being sarcastic, right? The entire post was being sarcastic. . . Cook is more physically prepared for the riggers of this position than he was a decade ago. . .new hips tend to do that. My guess is he’s got at least 4 years and probably 5 years left as the HC. Cook can’t keep assistants because he only hires the best VB minds available. . . Tomas and Hildebrand are world class coaches and the countdown for their stays in Lincoln began from the second they both stepped in the Devaney. IMO, it is not the same for Jaylen. . . Jaylen is younger and at a different point in his coaching evolution than either Tomas or Hildebrand were when they began their time in Lincoln and I think he can see himself in Cook’s spot in 5 years. . . I could tell some of it was sarcasm, which is why I decided to check and ask instead of assume lol. But fair enough, hopefully things will tell in time.

Exactly. There’s zero reason to believe anyone outside of Stanford, Texas, or Nebraska will win again next season. I know historically Americans love to ignore history... but there’s a good reason for the saying. A “new” winner will be a shock (and long overdue). Hell, the likelihood PSU accidentally wins again is higher than a newbie taking it.

I disagree with the negative comments on John Cook. I find him very complimentary of other teams and programs. He gets a lot of negative attention because he has been successful in the sport. Don’t mistake his confidence for arrogance. He is a good guy. I agree with this. Much as everyone hates New England because they always win but no one, not even Cincinnati, hates Cleveland. What a lot of people don't know about Cook is how much he cares about people. Did you know he can call by name the custodian or the bus driver on their road trips?

Texas has the same amount of NCs in the last 20 years as Washington and UCLA... USC even has more (2). It is true however that they've come closer more often than anyone else save Stanford... but have only broken through that 1 time.

Hell, the likelihood PSU accidentally wins again is higher than a newbie taking it. why is Texas among the giants with 5 or more championships? Because of the recent number of F4’s Texas has been in and they have the players to be there again next season. Washington and UCLA would be right there next on the list after PSU. They just don’t have as good for a “past 4-year” track record in the tournament as the other champions. Pit any of the former champions against say Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Baylor next season in a national championship match and I’m picking the former winner.

I think it's generally because they're in the Final Four so much, and they have the elite, highly-ranked recruiting classes - suggesting that in theory they should be able to win more NCs, even if they haven't. Sure, you could have a Big 3 rather than Big 4, but I see no big problem with TX in that group.

I definitely don't see them winning a title in the near future given the dispersion of talent these days. When is this reality going to sink in for the PSU faithful?

You do realize that Penn State was the practical favorite to win the National title in 2017 and fell short in the final four. Penn State will always be in the conversation as long as Russ Rose is the coach.

UT's last national championship was in 2012 (in the subsequent years they have always had the talent to win another and havent) 2. Penn State's last title was in 2014 (in the subsequent years they have not always had the same depth of talent as Texas and yet they have more to show for themselves the that same time span) Since 2012 Penn State has been to 2 championships match and have won 2 titles within that time frame. Texas has been to 3 championship matches and have 1 title to show for it.
