So named after a hat manufacturer? Stetson seems to be a good school, as I acknowledged, and well regarded by those who have heard of it, the point was more about its obscurity. Also half the colleges in the South seem to call themselves the Harvard of the South - at least thats what it looked like when I googled it, but the only school I had ever previously heard referred to that way was Vanderbilt - and even then a little mockingly. Whatever Stetson's reputation, Stanford is a different tier. You can walk into a job interview in Arkansas, Malawi, Taipei or Hartford and that Stanford degree takes you to the top of the pile. Stetson, not so much Nope, named after a philanthropist. A philanthropist who made his money manufacturing hats.

Nope, named after a philanthropist. A philanthropist who made his money manufacturing hats. What is tinman2 's issue with the hat-making past of John Stetson? The university is 100%, unequivocally named after the guy whom the Stetson hat is also named after. Hard to ever attain the status of philanthropist without getting your money from somewhere and Stetson's was from the hat business. Geez

Geez The original comment I took issue with was the university was named after a hat, when it was named after a person. Their mascot is John B. Stetson and he proudly wears the hat that made him rich.

You said Nope, a philanthropist. He manufactured hats, hence a hat manufacturer, and he gave away much of his fortune, hence also a philanthropist. Don't understand why you continued to quibble when the admission was made. Seemed like you weren't content with his hat-making past.

Seemed like you weren't content with his hat-making past. My point was quite simply to accurately report where the name originated. The school was named after a man because of his philanthropic actions. Why anyone else cares enough to chime in with further comments about the topic is out of my control.
