I don't find it surprising or shocking that athletes announce their retirement in their mid/late 20s.
The McNamara Twins were limited physically and their results on the World Tour (mostly Challenge or Challenge Qualies) were average with no upward trend.
Not everyone wants to grind like that for years with no prospect of great success. Especially if you have others interests in your life/Ideas for a different career.

Always enjoyed watching the McNamara twins play... Athletic and creative on the sand... Wish them well in whatever life brings them next!!!

So Pavan and McBain withdrew and a few days later one of the McNamaras retired and in answering an IG comment said her sister’s “announcement” was pending. Hmmmmm. As if we hadn’t already had enough back-stabbing among the Canadian women this quad!

crazy. they dominated the Vancouver scene. With sponsorship Im sure they could scratch out a living, but maybe just got burnt out like Ive seen other young players that have played at a high level during teen years. I was looking forward to seeing what they could do if they played strictly defense behind a blocker next quad (playing separately, of course). They could have provided some defender depth to the already limited Canadian National Team pool if they split up. Thankfully, Amy Ozee will be playing for Canada and can split block or play defender. In the end, they very are close twins and loved playing with each other. I agree they could have done well with sponsorships. When you retire at 26, there is a chance they miss it and come out of retirement.

I think there's a whole other thread about it, but there have been several unexpected partnership breakups in the middle of this Olympic cycle among teams that were Olympic hopefuls, leading to some hard feelings that were publicly expressed.

As if we hadn’t already had enough back-stabbing among the Canadian women this quad! I don't get your comment? Following the Pavan and Mel breakup. Brandie dumps Sophie without warning. Sophie was so sure in their partnership that she still trained with Brandie in the USA while Brandie played AVPs. Brandie asked if it was cool to play the AVP with Mel and Sophie said, yeah, that's cool. Sophie didn't think Brandie would leave her but she leaves her for Mel. Sophie and Pavan team up to make Canada #2 but breakup a few months later over personality differences or something. Sophie teams up with Shanice Marcelle and they qualify for the World Champs as a team through the NORCECA Continental Qualifying Beach Volleyball Tournament. They finished 3rd. Sophie dumps Shanice without warning and teams up with Heather Bansley who comes out of retirement. Shanice finds out that Sophie and Heather signed up for a tournament behind her back and then Sophie eventually dumps her via text message. Shanice didn't like that Heather teamed up with a top Canadian player when she was a coach for Volleyball Canada and their Next Gen program, as she was supposed to be trying to develop the next generation of Canadian beach volleyballers. Pavan teams up with McBain and they are trying to make an Olympic run. They are basically trying to beat out Sophie/Heather. Shanice is MIA and seems to be without a beach partner.

I would add that Mel dumped Pavan unexpectedly in the middle of the 2022 season, causing them to miss Pro Tour Finals (Pavan ended up getting a wild card with Sophie). Then Pavan dumped Sophie unexpectedly after just two events, despite good finishes points-wise. And Sophie dumped Shanice for their coach Heather the very next day after qualifying for World Champs (obviously they had been planning this for awhile). Pavan, Sophie, and Shanice have all publicly expressed disappointment with the way they were dumped.

What I find slightly annoying is that none of the resulting teams have faced each other on the sand. What's the point of having all this drama if there's no grudge match payoff? Almost seems like the teams are avoiding each other.

What I was referring to was how the twins retiring had anything to do with Canadian drama? And, Sarah did not dump Sophie. Shanice retired after all this. Bansley was coaching Shanice before Bansley teamed up with Sophie.

The post by beachcomber above speculated that Pavan might pick up one of the twins. Curious timing anyway after Sarah/Molly dropped out of Doha. I think if you listen to Sarah’s Sandcast appearance and read Sophie’s IG posts, both strongly suggest that Sarah dumped Sophie. But if you have more details about what really happened, please share!

And even beyond the split, Sophie was clearly upset with Sarah for “stealing” her World Champs berth.

Then it was down hill from there and then people were speculating that the pair were on the brink of a breakup. I do remember Mel making a post about her new partnership saying something like, It's good to be having fun again playing beach volleyball. I think Sophie made a similar post after splitting with Pavan.
