For comparison here are the Doha World Tour Finals in December'23. Agreed. Tina doesn't have the option variety of Cheng (nobody does). But you can't argue with her consistency. Two end-game poor choices vs. CAN kept Latvia out of the Finals but the bottom line is that Graudina is always in the top five attackers. I'd say her option game is one of the best, despite being forced to use it more often. That makes her more predictable and shot selection more difficult - but she is always at or near the top of attack efficiency. When Ana raises her level like she did this time Latvia can medal. Samoilova's .422 this week compared to .208 last year is a big difference.
Victoria .490 Kloth .464 Ana Patricia .445 Cheng .430 Clancy .429 Graudina .423
Stam .380 Duda .377 Schoon . 356 MH-Paredes .336 Muller .329 Nuss .310
Hughes .301 Wilkerson .301 Artachio Del S. .260 Taina .250 Samoilova .208 en.volleyballworld.com/beachvolleyball/competitions/beach-pro-tour/2023/the-finals/doha-qat/statistics/women/best-attackers/

It’s wild to see completely empty stands. It’s so weird to see all of the players still waving to empty seats whenever they are introduced as if there are fans. Not really sure why Doha continues to host events. Ive never seen it crowded there and most of the time its near empty. Qataris just are not sports fans but whoever it is there that keeps putting up all this money, thank you for keeping the sport alive Not sure if you were asking rhetorically but I believe it's because wealthy Qataris want to keep the nation friendly with the West for economic reasons, and sports don't threaten the social culture. At least, that's why they bid for the World Cup and started hosting major tennis and volleyball tournaments. Doesn't seem like the investors care that local interest is non-existent.

I think the most attended I've seen the crowd in Doha was a bronze medal match between Qatar #1 and Phil/Nick.

But their revenue model seems built on Streaming Subscriptions, Advertising and Merchandise... Therefore.. Inexpensive locations to put on tournaments is far more important than the number of spectators...

Sportwashing amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/nov/16/sportswashing-qatar-west-world-cup-regimeFor the World Cup maybe, but even that I tend to think was more a "look at how wealthy we are". But even if that was sportwashing, how stupid would a person have to be to believe that the 6-12,000 fans worldwide who watch a Doha Elite 16 or a WTF will merit the multiple millions Qatar is spending on these events. Either way, in terms of Elite events, Qatar is probably paying for close to a quarter of the tour in non WC years

Thanks for your lovely summaries. What I was referring to was how the twins retiring had anything to do with Canadian drama? And, Sarah did not dump Sophie. Shanice retired after all this. Bansley was coaching Shanice before Bansley teamed up with Sophie. Yeah, Pavan initiated the split but I think she was open with Sophie on why she didn't want to play with her. Sophie was on the Sandcast this week and dropped a couple of nuggets about what happened to her partnership with Sarah. volleyballmag.com/sophie-bukovec-beach-volleyball-032024/The first clue was about 14 minutes in when Travis said he thought Sophie and Sarah were having success when Sophie enthusiastically interjected "me too!". Then a couple minutes later Sophie said that it was Sarah who broke up their team. But interestingly, in the accompanying VBM article, Travis quoted Sophie as saying "Sarah and I broke up our team". So I went back and listened (at about 16:19) at least a half dozen times and she clearly said "Sarah broke up our team". The YouTube transcript also confirms this. So was this just an innocent transcription error by Travis? Or was it a deliberate attempt at quote manipulation, attempting to fit a particular narrative or agenda? Anyway, later in the episode Sophie discussed a bit more about why she and Sarah's partnership didn't work. She said their personalities clashed, but also mentioned that volleyball isn't her whole life, not her end all be all, and she also wanted to spend time doing what makes her happy. This is consistent with Sarah's comments on Sandcast last year about younger players (without specifically mentioning Sophie) not being as dedicated to the sport as she is. The other thing I picked up from this episode is that when Sarah and Sophie split, Sophie immediately called Heather and asked her to come out of retirement. But Heather told Sophie she needed time to make that decision and also work things out with the Canadian Federation where she was a coach. So that would have been about two months, during which Sophie played a NORCECA with Shanice Marcelle, winning a World Champs berth. That also meshes with Shanice's contention that Heather had been planning (or at least contemplating) this for weeks behind her back while also coaching Sophie and Shanice. It also suggests that others within the Federation were also aware of this scheme long before Shanice found out, so it's quite understandable why Shanice was so upset.

Thank you for listening to this and transcribing. “Volleyball isn’t my end all be all” followed by all the drama between her, Shanice, and Heather. I really think these other Canadians don’t understand what it means to be a generational talent dedicated to winning. Pavan had the misfortune of being Canadian and unlikeable while still being dedicated to winning. Playing indoor and beach at the same time, going through four Olympics cycles always the best on her team. I pray for the day that female athletes will not be criticized for caring about winning foremost.

I still like Sophie and I'll watch her sandcast episode (first one in a long time). Obviously beach vb isn't her whole life but saying that makes people not take you serious as a competitor. If you have a whole season planned or Olympic cycle, then you lock in. I can see why Pavs wasn't having it.
