Is anyone else a bit disappointed in the lack of US women's teams in this and the next Challenge event? I assume Scoles is still rehabbing, but where are Flint, Kolinske, Cannon, etc.?
Some of the factors that I would guess are causing teams to skip these events: Olympic spots already claimed, low prize money for Challenge events, middle of the college season, and veterans coming back from injury or childbirth. But as a fan, I would like to have a US team or two in the field to root for (I know there are three in the qualifier - Hildreth/Van Gunst, Sweat/Coakley, Savvy/Toni - but none of them seem likely to do much damage in the main draw, even if they get there), and I worry that the American depth may not actually be that good if we don't have any Challenge level teams.

Strong start for SimRod. Interested to see how they do after a long break.

Norway pulled a very experienced short straw in QF.

Toni served out twice on her own set point. Both teams have weak offence.
Brazil wins the first 25-23.

Toni and Sav on CC right now. Very questionable open hand dig by Brazil let go by the ref at 20-19 that would’ve given set one to USA. Brazil comes back to win the set after some shaky ball control by SimRod.

Savvy struggling in sideout in crunch time then gets aced to end the first set. Bummer of a finish but I thought they started way stronger than I expected. Here’s hoping for just one point better in the second!

Norway pulled a very experienced short straw in QF. Makes me happy to see those two back together. Their win in Cancun was second only to Kerri/Brooke's win in the last 5-10 years in terms of how much I enjoyed a team winning on the women's side.

Here’s hoping for just one point better in the second! They completely fell apart in the second set, 21-11. Split blocking. Neither player looked like they wanted to be there. It wouldn’t be a surprise if this team broke up for good this time.

Ouf. The Slovenians have hit that back line at least 3 times on their serves.

Ouf. The Slovenians have hit that back line at least 3 times on their serves. Slovenia got a couple breaks with those serves, although I think part of that was Kennedy hoping for a cheap sideout instead of playing the close ones and earning it. That said from the time Brooke/Kennedy were up 12-10 in game 1, Slovenia just outclassed them. Kennedy is big and young, so could improve fast, and maybe she is still battling nerves, but she doesn't belong at this level right now.

I know they're getting in on Brooke's injury points, but they really should be playing Futures events. Not sure where they're training, but I don't see how this helps Kennedy's development. And she's missing her high school senior year for this.
