No American women's teams in the main draw of a Challenger in the Western Hemisphere. Maybe the USA isn't as deep as we all thought. Where are all the recent NCAA grads? Well, Tina graduated less than two years ago and she’s seeded 2nd in this tourney. 😝 Julia also less than two years ago would be up there as well if not recovering as mentioned. ✌️

Toni and Sav on CC right now. Very questionable open hand dig by Brazil let go by the ref at 20-19 that would’ve given set one to USA. Brazil comes back to win the set after some shaky ball control by SimRod. Agreed. Could've been a double and a lift. I tuned out after the first cos the match was a bit ugly.

Wow. Japan pushing Agatha/Rebecca to three after BRA looked firmly in control in the first.

Swiss look like they are going to pass out. Just gave up a flat footed kill to Austria to go down 4-1 in the 3rd. Not sure lil sis can afford to lose this match but they arent in shape for this weather, or at least it looks like that

Saw a few points where Rebecca looked particularly apathetic out there.

well. that's it for the Women's side for USA. At least the men have 2 MD plus Tri/Chaim who should win their Quali to get to Pool. Good question about the women's depth. Scoles plus Flint would definitely be playing MD if not for her surgery. So that's USA3. Understandably USA1 and USA2 not here. Not sure now with the Olympic race over, even who USA4, USA5, etc. would be. College volleyball is in season so that explains the absence of Madi May Anderson (and partner Molly Turner), and also Megan Kraft (and recent partner Cannon). I think Zana is done with FIVB. What about Kolinske? If she's not playing Brazil in late March, then is she only AVP now? I have heard some rumors for a while that the mid tier women (and most all the men) are seeing the writing on the wall with where the AVP is going and domestically, and are starting to step away from the full time grind of playing to start looking for incorporating life and work more. I guess the players have been talking for quite some time and just don't really see a light at the end of the professional tunnel. It's been hard enough as it is for the last few years. If there is not much of a domestic tour to speak of I can't see any of them really putting in the financial grind of playing all these challenger/future tournaments knowing who's at the top of the food chain.

I think by 1989 on the men's side, it was clear a good living could be make of playing just AVP. Hell, Karch and Kent make $400k each several times. which is over $1M dollars in today's money. $3M if you're talking about the cost of buying a home in west of the 405.
So we've gone from annual earnings of the cost a 3/2 home in Pacific Palisades (where Randy lives), to annual earnings of the cost of a mobile home in Blythe (some of you will have to look that up)
Maybe Sponcil ended up in the better place, but there's no guaranteed future there either.

Zoe/Esmee have to beat Agatha/Rebecca to even break pool yikes, while Joanna/Anouk get ANOTHER injury forfeit to advance. Big sis might be burying little sis real quick in these last two tourneys.

Probably not a real injury forfeit this time. Ittlinger/Borger are already into the Round of 16 and likely saw no reason to play that match. Same with Hermannova/Stochlova forfeiting to Finland. Still a tough matchup for Zoe/Esmee. All three matches in Pool C have gone three sets.

Cool that you guys don't want to play matches during a volleyball tournament but maybe your team should hav e to pay $1,000 for pulling that BS.

Without a reasonably stable domestic tour we're probably just wasting the pipeline that is the NCAA game. Hard to imagine that the current generation of women's Olympians, Cheng, Sponcil, Hughes, Kloth, Nuss, etc. would be where they are today without cutting their teeth on the AVP. Even someone like Klineman likely doesn't come out to the beach without the AVP. Perhaps we'll see the next generation of US beach players committed to making an Olympic run moving to Europe or Brazil and training with top players there, minimizing travel costs. Much like indoor players do. Kind of a key year for the AVP and USAV. If they can't make something work domestically, the start of the LA Olympic cycle next year is going to look very bleak for the Americans.
