What was the logistics between having so little time between the red-white and season opener? I don’t think it’s ever been this short before between them.

Also, I can't remember a real season opener on a Tuesday before? I thought historically all teams started first season match on a Friday as part of a weekend tournament.

AVCA trying to #GrowTheGame with some primetime television?

This just feels wrong to me. There is something kinda fun of ALL teams starting their season on the same day (or at least being able to). I definitely think these showcase teams should play each other in the non-conference, but why does it have to be before the rest of the country gets to play?

Yeah, I imagine there was something with the TV schedule so that these games couldn't have been played on Thursday, at least, as an official opener for the season.

I definitely think these showcase teams should play each other in the non-conference, but why does it have to be before the rest of the country gets to play? It's to start the season with a promotional event to get people interested in going to the final four. 2 top 10 teams in the state where the final four will be and 2 top 10 teams that sell out arenas. It's a calculated move to get butts in seats come December. And 20 years ago, wasn't this an annual thing? Edit: and having it before other games keeps other games from detracting viewers.
