The Deaf population in the US is around 37 million people, but there are just 15,500 certified ASL interpreters. UW-Milwaukee is looking to change that - they are the only public or private university in Wisconsin to offer a Bachelors of Science in American Sign Language / English Interpreting. The program began in the early 1990s as a submajor under the School of Education and achieved status as a standalone degree in 2022.
Helena Meyer, a student in the UWM ASL program, converses with a peer during an event.
The program focuses not just on language, but also on Deaf history and culture, and on community immersion. All program faculty are Deaf, and all the classes are silent, taught fully in ASL. Students also have the option of living in a dedicated residence hall for Deaf students and those who know or are learning ASL.
UWM ASL student Morgan Inches interprets for a volunteer patient during a mock doctor's visit. She wears black to make her hands more visible, and a clear mask to facilitate lip reading.
A bachelorâs degree in ASL is a prerequisite for national certification testing. Once certified, Milwaukee ASL grads are eligible for state licensure, which is required for interpreters to work in educational or community settings. Additional specialty certifications are available for medical and legal interpreters.Â
