The University of Phoenix is a franchised for profit online paper mill that was sued by the FTC for fraudulent advertising, and had to pay a $191 million to the government to settle the case. Hawks doesn’t have a real degree, just a piece of worthless paper that he paid for and the same reason that other coaches have been fired for, as he should be.

I remember seeing an interview with Shaq and they talked about University of Phoenix. I'm basically paraphrasing the story here, but when Shaq signed up, they told him everything was online. He was like no, I want a real class where I come onto campus and meet with a live professor. They said sorry, but we don't have enough local students to do an on-prem professor. So Shaq said fine, let me sign up these other 10 guys and then you can teach us all at the same time.
Who knows, maybe Coach Hawks was in Shaq's class :-)

Probably not, since they were designed to be online only! They are what they are - an online paper mill with a very bad reputation. UCLA deserves better.

UCLA deserves better. they are accredited by the government, there are lots of students that got useful educations from UOPX and may have learned more than some that got a degree at UCLA. A degree is frequently worth exactly what you put into it. The slope is slippery, but what is clear is that UCLA didn't break the law contrary to your previous slander.

Technically, the accreditation isn't done by the government, but nevertheless, University of Phoenix is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (http://hlcommission.org), an institutional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. University of Phoenix has been continually accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1978.

I never said that UCLA broke the law - I said that they violated UCLA policy on hiring. When recruiters see UOP on a resume, the resume is usually dumped in the trash, because UOP is a paper mill, which is why they keep getting sued.

UOPX got sued because they claim their degrees will get you jobs and convinced people into going into debt for a degree that didn't help them get a job.
It seems like Hawks could be used as evidence to to defend UOPX's claim that their degree does get you a killer dream job. Same with a large number of public school teachers with UOPX masters degrees and related salary bumps.
I do not think a college degree is an important qualification for being a good coach but credit to Hawks for checking that box so he could advance in his profession.

But Hawks didn’t check that box - that’s the point - he only got a degree from a paper mill, which is what caused another scandal at UCLA, when it was discovered that Saldana - the Men’s Head Soccer coach got a similar paper mill degree. You’re right, of course, that a college degree doesn’t insure greatness as a coach, but it is a requirement to be a Head Coach at UCLA, and paper mill degrees, like UOP, don’t count.

It's an accredited degree granting university. It may certainly be the case that it is not viewed as a prestigious degree, but it is not true that UCLA violated its own policy if it hired someone with a degree from the University of Phoenix.

According to most of the online posts regarding UOP, it IS regarded as a paper mill.

According to most of the online posts regarding UOP, it IS regarded as a paper mill. You can argue about the public opinion of the school, but public opinion is not a requirement for the job. The school is accredited and Hawks meets the requirement. I think his education is the wrong hill to die on - you can argue his ability to coach all you want, but stating that he’s not qualified because he went to a school considered to be a “paper mill” is not a valid argument

It’s a valid argument, in that UCLA Athletics can’t violate its own policies, and has previously determined that schools like UOP don’t meet UCLA’s standards. And, yes, I think he’s a to talky unqualified coach, from any standpoint. I saw him in the role of Assistant Coach at UCLA, and that’s where my bias against his appointment originates, but if a paper mill degree gets rid of him, so that UCLA can get a better coach, then I’m all for it.

When did they previously determine that UOP doesn’t meet the criteria?
