Robinson looked okay, but not nearly as impressive as Rama. I think he was treating the weekend as a scrimmage and maybe not going all out, which is fine. As long as he stays healthy he will be ready when the season starts. Rama had a great weekend. HIs back row defense was amazing and his hitting was really impressive. Against SC he was consistently going over the top of Tomkinson and was very effective on out of system hitting. I think he got aced some, but overall I thought his passing was pretty decent. I do think Tomkinson is going to be really good for SC. Hitting looks really smooth and he moves pretty well.
To me, Aziz looked the best of all of the liberos. I thought he go to serve receive sometimes, but was still mostly alternating. McDonough and Curci struggled on serve receive, although McDonough did start to pass better against UCSB. I thought Chun looked okay in serve receive. Still not clear who will start, but I suspect Aziz will at the very least be the full time defensive libero.
Edwards looked great against SC out of the middle, in both hitting and blocking, but did not play the rest of the weekend. Zamprongo looked very good on Friday with Rowan, but struggled on Saturday on connections with Taliaferro. Hersh and Graves had interesting weekends. Both looked awful on Friday and looked terrific on Saturday. Hersh got to hit off of Rowan against UCSB and looked like a different attacker. McQuiggan was in street clothes and did not play. If I had to guess I would say he has a right arm or shoulder issue, but I was not able to ask anyone about his status. If McQuiggan is not able to play then I think Edwards would start opposite Thorne, who by the way looked fantastic. Best middle in the gym by far in my opinion. He also looks tiny on the court compared to his teammates.
