I thought Purdue played a really good game last night. To be honest, I thought they were gonna get blowout because Kandas is such a great passing team and Turner has been the real deal for years now. Credit to Purdue for serving much tougher than they have. But also full credit to Kansas' insane floor defense!
Purdue put on a good defensive show too. 5 players with double digit digs hasn't happened since the Otec/Hornung/Newton/Bush days.
Hudson and Choine were monstrous for a good portion of the night. I thought Anderson was doing fantastic things with the ball, especially getting it to Colvin in transition. Would like to see Anderson set the ball higher if she wants to set our M2 in front of her.
They need Myers to STAY OUT OF THE NET because her blocking is too important. I don't think Carr is on that level in the middle yet.
I'm also not sold on Wollard's offense. She had too many errors where she just hit the ball out, especially in rotation 1, which is weird to me since her natural position is OH. Would've been nice to have the option to put Carr on the right yesterday.
Great stuff to build on. If we can get the right side to step up and for Hornung to make just a few more defensive plays (I thought she was better than what she's being given credit for) than I think Purdue can be just as in it with Creighton.

Even several years ago when bll handling loosened it was directed that any ball crossing the net or legally blocked should be cleanly played. I would say it prob would have been called last year. It's possible, and I'm just going off anecdotes, where I don't remember many/any doubles over the net being called, but I have seen several this year, could just be selective memory. But very few on 2nd contact setter dumps, when they take it with two hands and drop it over the front row blockers, around opponents 5-10' deep essentially. I still can't get over how many times on a tight ball a front row player will go up with two hands and slam it down and nothing is called. Been that way for 20 years or so, so I guess I just have to get over it. But when an OH does it off a normal set, it would be called easily.

I didn't realize Chicoine was not jump spin serving anymore. I thought late last year she went to the jump float but I figured she would be back to the topspin again this season. Anyone with knowledge on the change?

Anyone with knowledge on the change? She was jump serving at the start of this season too. Sometimes it was very effective, sometimes not so much. They switched her to full-time jump float during the matches in Utah. I feel it's because she was more accurate with her float, going on quite a few service runs. No insider info though.

A lot of the criticism of the back row is likely because Kansas was making so many plays, so average play by comparison is going to look worse. There was a distinct difference watching the 2 teams.

Which I totally get -- I just don't know if it's a fair comparison. Burns is a beast. We knew that last year. Bien was recruited as a libero and her defense has always been her strength. Elnady isn't a slouch either. Turner is relentless as well. Those last three are also seniors. Meanwhile, Purdue has Hornung in her first year at libero, a freshman in McAleer, sophomores in Anderson and Choine, and an improving but still not there Hudson. I get what people are seeing on the surface -- I just think there should be some context on WHY Kansas looked so much better.

Just want to shoutout this commentating duo for these matches. They've been fantastic. I really enjoy the color commentator. I know she's a former player, but she's really great about breaking things down and providing informative and fun background. Plus, her voice is so calming lol. I think this is the same team from last year. bluepenquin—does this duo do all the Kansas games?

They’ve been commentating consistently on games since at least 2015 and Jill Dorsey-Hall has done a huge part in helping me understand the game of volleyball. I’ve said this multiple times in this board, but she is much better than most of the national color commentators out there and does a lot in educating fans about the game. She went to KU, but always does the work to talk to the opposing coaching staff and understand the players and storylines of other teams too. We’re truly lucky.

How many Kansas games have I missed?!?! She genuinely is way better than the commentators I hear across the board on national broadcasts. So informative, a genuine love and appreciation for the game, and very unbiased. You can tell she puts in a ton of effort getting to know coaches/players. Plus she's fun too! So much respect (and envy) of Kansas fans for having this dynamic duo.

Also buttery, I welcome feedback from ALL KU fans. Blue has just been the most prominent during my VT tenure. I didn't know your game before this weekend but I do now! 🫡

I think this is the same team from last year. bluepenquin —does this duo do all the Kansas games? They do - and Buttery had good comments on Jill Dorsey-Hall. Leif Lisec is the play by play guy. He was from what I remember a local Kansas City sports news reporter. He generally doesn't know crap about volleyball (which is very common with volleyball play by play announcers). He was hired to several years ago to do the ESPN volleyball broadcast for Kansas games. I don't know what else he broadcasts, but I suspect it is other sports. He is 'professional' in calling the game and does work well with Jill (since he rightfully isn't going to provide any analysis). Since he has been doing this for at least 5 years - his knowledge of VB has improved which makes it better, but it is going to be limited. I think both do a very good job of not being 'homers' for Kansas? And for Kansas fans - Dorsey-Hall talks to the Kansas coaching staff where she can get some tidbits of news that isn't coming from anywhere else. She is also networked with Kansas City HS and Club volleyball.
