Evanston is home to the tallest lighthouse in Illinois the Grosse Point Lighthouse. Standing at 113 feet (34 meters), Grosse Point Lighthouse is also the state's oldest lighthouse to remain standing. Constructed in the early 1870s after dozens of maritime disasters made it clear that the Chicago lighthouses were insufficient to keep ships safe as they transited the shoals near the point on their way to harbor in Chicago, the Grosse Point Lighthouse was first illuminated in 1874. 


The Grosse Point Lighthouse was electrified in 1924 and remains in operation today.

The lighthouse uses a second-order Fresnel lens, the largest used on the Great Lakes and one of only five ever installed in lighthouses there. In a Fresnel lens, hundreds of pieces of specially cut glass surround a lamp bulb. This design intensifies the glow from the light, focusing rays of light that would normally scatter into a single, intense beam of light, which shines out in a specific direction. The beam of light from Grosse Point's optic could be seen up to 20 miles over the lake in good atmospheric conditions.


A first-order Fresnel lens stands at 2.59m. The second order lens at Grosse Point is about a half-meter smaller.

After facing the relentless Gophers, The Badgers should be less stressed this weekend. I hope Lola gets another shot and the veterans play like they've been around for a while.

I felt based on prior two or three games passing stats that GG would get the nod on Weds. Lola just was not passing well in the previous few matches. Maybe the load of being L was just too much too early?

Not sure what Sheff does now. Does he let GG take the weight in these kid of matches while letting Lola get a bit more acclimated until she can eventually take the L role? Do they still think they can pull a Barnes or Clark passing-180 with GG and keep the OOS setting everyone is used to? Or does he just throw Lola in under the expectation that she will eventually be the one anyway? Forced to guess I'd say the latter, based on not much at all, but wouldn't be surprised with any of those options. How does Damrow or Chan fit into all of this?

I have a feeling that whoever claims libero depends on how much the badgers depend on transition in attack. If they can't play D and transition better, they absolutely need to play better first ball side out better, which means MUCH better passing. The main thing I want to see is the badgers working on the middle and RS attack and the block. I want to see connections working better, especially in transition.

Just saw that NW beat Maryland - nice job. That's a big win after their early woes, new coach, etc. Slow start to the season. Won 1 or 2 sets in all but one match while going 0-6, but then got a few wins and now opening up conference play with a road win.

Kelly said a lot of film would be studied and lessons learned after too many mental mistakes v. The Gophers. I second that emotion and I'm hoping for signs of progress tonight. Badgers in 4 because a sweep is too much to ask for at this point in time.

Long jumper helps in BR attack [Doesn't sound entirely sure she's done!]

Favorite athlete: All the girls she's playing with. Watched theem and idolized all while in HS.
Privilege to be on the same court. It's crazy she gets to call them by their first name. [this is cute]

What's best stat they give the team: Annemarie gives the players 12 pp of stats post match.
She would say the diff in HP.
Also which rotation is most efficient. 
Rouseau: A lefty that can attack on 2. 4 attempts per set. [that's a lot!]
Hassan: 8.2 A/S. Heartbeat of the team. She is spunky!

Sheffield
Minnesota passed a 1.6, the lowest any opponent has passed against the badgers.
No need to serve aggressively in that situation and get service errors (they had 3).
Shouldn't pass to the one player who is passing OK! Need to be conscious of situation.
Ball control in the 5th was atrociuous. Needs to get better. Need to communicate about what plays they were running.
Despite playing badly, they still almost stole the match against a top 20 team.
Best D players: Annemarie, Morey, Clark, Barnes, Bates by the time she left, Carlini the best zone 1 defender in the world.
Has to get back to Jon about whose best.
