#9 Wisconsin vs. Michigan | Sunday, October 20, 2024 - 6:30 PM Central | Crisler Center - Ann Arbor, Michigan |
Follow Along On this day in 1968, Dick Fosbury executed a 2.24 meter high jump in a Mexico City arena, breaking the Olympic record and securing a gold medal in that event. With that jump, he completely changed the face of the athletics event. The back-first technique, which would become known as the Fosbury Flop, featured a curved, J-shaped approach run, and a parabolic flight through the air. At the next Olympics in 1972 at Munich, 28 of the 40 competitors used Fosbury's technique.

At least this one's televised... in prime time! It's the annual Mustelid Melee, or as Wiswell calls it, the WEASEL WAR! Working on links this morning.

When I saw the 'fun facts' was Dick Fosbury and his Fosbury Flop, I assumed me must have some Michigan connection. But I don't find one. Was it just an 'on this date'? Wisconsin has its own famous high jumper, Pat Matzdorf. World record setter in 1971, right at the time the Fosbury Flop was revolutionizing the high jump, Matzdorf is (I'm pretty sure) the second last record holder still using the old 'straddle' way of jumping (Ukrainian Vladimir Yashchenko being the last). Five years or so later, I remember seeing Matzdorf playing pick-up basketball at the now 'late, great" UW Shell. He was a pretty good rebounder, too.

History
The Series: Wisconsin leads 64-19 In Madison: Wisconsin leads 37-4 In Ann Arbor: Wisconsin leads 26-12 Neutral: Michigan leads 3-1
Those numbers aren't quite adding up? The Michigan record book has the series at 21-63, so who knows? Michigan has only beaten Wisconsin once in the last 10 years. The Wolverines will likely be without Serena Nyambio, their best MB who did not dress on Friday against Washington. That is only going to further hurt what already is the worst blocking team in the B1G. She will likely be replaced by freshman Jenna Hanes who held her own against the Huskies in her debut. Michigan relies heavily on their serve and pass game for success, so keeping the Badgers out of system will be key. They will need some sloppy chaos to have any chance tonight. Go Blue!

I'm starting to refer to just B1G stats now to compare teams, since OOC strength varies so much and teams evolve so much over the early part of the season. Neither the whole season stats nor B1G stats are that good this time of year though. The teams have had few overlapping opponents in the B1g save Washington and Rutgers, the wolverines sweeping the former and dropping two sets to the latter. That said, I think the badgers playing Rutgers, NWx2 and MD have had the more cup-cakey schedule overall. So with those caveats in mind.
Badger are hitting about 100 point better than UM, and allowing an HP against that's 80 pts lower. Badgers have the highest SA/S in the B1G with 2.29, but Michigan is a healthy 3rd with 1.75. Badger nearly double up Michigan on blocks/s 3.17 to 1.5.
Losing Nyambio is big for Michigan in my opinion. I wish she were playing. But new players can surprise you since you don't have a lot of tape on them yet.
I always think serving is among the hardest things to predict match to match, and being comfortable serving (and receiving) in a location can be a big plus for a team that relies on serving. As bprtbone says, that's the apparent big picture road in for Michigan. Vaulet is obviously the big player to watch there, with 0.73 A/S and a 1.3 SA/SE ratio. The badgers have 5 players with A/S as good as the wolverine second best A/S server, Chopra. If they can get on a run with Chopra and avoid giving up runs in other rotations, this could get competitive.

Ready for another Badger win!! I keep telling myself to slow down and enjoy the season, but after every game I find myself wanting the next game to hurry and get here.

Based on absolutely no research whatsoever, I'm predicting a big day from our right pins. I feel like Anna didn't have her best night on Friday and will want to leave some dents in the floor and Dev has been a monster all year.

Still lots to work on but I am confident they will be a different team in December. I hope!

I was hoping by November so they could take a crack at winning the conference, but I think you're right about it being December.

Interesting how that Oregon match has badger fans doubting even though they won pretty convincingly in 4. I'll agree it was so ugly it even shook my confidence a little. But the team found a way and got better in some respects - especially the defense.
I'm more worried about playing on the road in a big arena. Badgers always struggle a bit in the Crisler center.
