Another interesting note: Katie Bruzdzinski making the team after not making All-Big Ten. ... hmmm... same w/Bryn Kehoe. left off the PAC-10 all conference list but makes HM in the Pacific region.

IB's radical thought of the day.
Abolish AVCA All-Region Teams.
Why? It promotes the ideas of Regionalization which the NCAA seems so fond of lately. Plus, it's not a true indicator of talent at a National level.
These teams, also are inconsistent with a team's relative national ranking, in my opinion.
For instance. Tell me how the QUANTITY of awards per school can be justified or NOT justified, depending on the case.
Central Region Nebraska (6) Missouri (3) Texas (3) Colorado (2) Wichita State (2) Missouri State (1) Stephen F. Austin (1) Texas A&M (1)
East Region Maryland (5) Duke (3) Clemson (2) Miami (Fla.) (2) North Carolina (2) Boston College (1) Florida State (1) Georgia Tech (1) Hofstra (1) NC State (1) Virginia (1) Virginia Commonwealth (1)
Mideast Region Penn State (6) Ohio (3) Ball State (2) Ohio State (2) Purdue (2) Michigan (1) Minnesota (1) Western Michigan (1) Wisconsin (1)
Midwest Region Houston (3) Rice (3) Texas-El Paso (2) Tulane (2) Cleveland State (1) Eastern Kentucky (1) Jacksonville State (1) Tulsa (1) UAB (1) Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1)
Northeast Region Louisville (3) Notre Dame (3) Albany (2) Pittsburgh (2) St. John's (2) Cincinnati (1) Cornell (1) Dayton (1) Saint Louis (1) Syracuse (1) Yale (1)
Pacific Region Washington (5) Stanford (4) Santa Clara (3) Arizona (2) San Diego (2) USC (2) UCLA (1)
South Region Tennessee (4) Florida (3) Western Kentucky (3) Kentucky (2) Florida Atlantic (1) Georgia (1) LSU (1) Middle Tennessee (1) South Carolina (1)
West Region Hawaii (3) Utah (3) Brigham Young (2) Long Beach State (2) Utah State (2) Colorado State (1) Nevada (1) New Mexico State (1) Pacific (1) UC Santa Barbara (1) UC-Irvine (1) UNLV (1)
Then, tell me how the LACK of schools representation on a national level is hurt because of lack of awards at this scale and domination of conferences within these regions.

I am sort of torn on this. In the past, all region teams were very effective. They helped to promote volleyball all over the country. If not for the regions, you might have ended up with only players from Stanford, Hawaii, UCLA, and Pacific on the first team. Instead, the regions allowed other players to be recognized for their achievements. Admittedly, some players didn't get the recognition they deserved. Some players got pushed to second teams and those who would have been second team AAs were not included. But this allowed for the growth of volleyball in other areas.
Now, it might not be as important. We have the ability to view players from other areas, and parity in volleyball is becoming more prevalent. I can still see some need for the regions, but I think limiting stronger regions still doesn't give some players the recognition they deserve.

Regarding UNC losing in the first round. The College of Charleston was 31-1 coming into the match with(I believe)the #1 rated defense in the country.I would rate them higher than American University and Kentucky which Duke and Maryland played. As ACC Champion,UNC should have had more selections to the East region team than Duke and as many as Maryland.

See, these Regional rankings bring about statements like this which, are one of the reasons I hate the Regional rankings. Does anyone honestly believe that the College of Charleston really had the top rated defense in the country? Who is doing the rating and on what criteria? The fact is that any team from the East Region could have been pulled out of the hat to represent that Region and they all would face similar defeat early. Regions such as the East are weak and only produce weak matchups. Let's get away from Regionalization!

Bearclause you mention her hitting %. Why not throw them out out there. Ace, Solo blocks digs, and so on. Not to mention Arizona is still in the tourney. They should have two players up there if not more.

... hmmm... same w/Bryn Kehoe. left off the PAC-10 all conference list but makes HM in the Pacific region. Kehoe was injured at a point where she missed more than 1/3 of the Pac-10 conference season. I don't know if there's any cutoff with the Pac-10. She did play in 84 of 113 games on the full season, which would make her eligible for AVCA honors.

They should have two players up there if not more. Sure. The primary AVCA comparison criteria for OH is supposed to be hitting, kills/game, then digs/game. Angie: .251 hitting, 4.14 kills/game, .26 aces/game, 2.84 digs/game, 14 BS/59 BA, .68 blocks/game. Jen: .239 hitting, 4.04 kills/game, .37 aces/game, 3.40 digs/game, 18 BS/35 BA, .53 blocks/game.

They tried addressing this last season by modifying the rules on AA awards. For the first time, "strong" candidates from the regional team HM lists were eligible for full AA honors. Candelas and McFarland got 3rd team AA last season. I'm still scratching my head over Keao Burdine getting 1st team AA honors after hitting .239 on the season.

Is the committee for the mideast region comprised of MAC coaches only? That is crazy!

Earth to IB - college volleyball is a revenue draining sport, not a revenue generating sport like basketball or football. The NCAA will not,in the near future, have teams in the early rounds flying all over the country.Money(as with many things)is the driving force. That`s just the way it is.

You know what I'd like to see? If they insist on having Regions, I'd like to see the "All-Region" teams reflect actual regions and not just conference groupings. Make a definition of region that is independent of conference affiliations. It doesn't make sense to me that Dayton, Louisville and Notre Dame are in the "Northeast" region but Penn St, Ohio, and Ohio St are Mideast.
Now granted, conference affiliations are just as silly, but why should the NCAA limit themselves to conferences when assigning regions?

Well, SC made the Final Four and did well in conference. The .239 was pretty decent since she was the go-to player and the setting was pretty lousy last season.
