Missouri I thought would pose a challenge, I was wrong. Top 20 definitely, Top 10 maybe.

Funny to see the words "LBSU" and "crack" in the same sentence.

Missouri I thought would pose a challenge, I was wrong. Top 20 definitely, Top 10 maybe. I think people forgot how much Missouri lost. A four year starting setter, a great MB, and the Missouri record holder for digs, kills, aces, and kpg in Shen Danru. I am not at all suprised they got swept.

The Beach lost more -- and weren't all that good to start with. This is a huge upset.

I wouldn't consider this an upset at all. I could not believe they were ranked 13th. Hunter was the best setter I've seen in years and she was the team. Throw in the others that are gone it should be no big surprise.

Beach is much more talented than last season. The departure of Daley seems to have brought the team together. They played hard. However, Mizzou, was not impressive. Many of the Mizzou hitting errors were unforced. The true test of Beach is mental makeup. The test is how they play against medicore teams. Against Villanova, Beach was sluggish and sloppy. This will haunt them this year. They are no where near a top ten team. However, Beach does have a lot of room to grow. The Hasalikova / Crimes tandom is as dominant as any MB's in the country. Looking at their schedule, They will get stomped in Nebraska. They will split with Cal Poly and UCSB. Tough match against St. Mary's. Watching Beach against Villanova proved they will slip a couple more times this year. A much better team than last couple years, but still no better than 3 losses and top 15.

I would be careful about drawing too many inferences from LBSU's defeat of Missouri. Missouri is not a very good team. They might improve as the season progresses, but, I think there are going to be many teams better then they are. I would also hold off on describing the Long Beach middles as "dominant". Offensively they will be OK. (But will Crimes ever hit the ball! With her size and jumping ability she should be a dominant hitter, hitting over and around opposing middle. Either due to bad setting, spacing, or timing, she spends most of the time hitting off the block or "slopping the ball" over the net. Knowing what she is capable of, it is very frustrating to watch!) As blockers they will have problems. On those rare occasions when Missouri was "in system" Hasalikova was a half step slow getting to the outside. Crimes has the speed to close, but, she guesses on the sets and usually goes the wrong way. Lots of split blocks! Good teams will exploit this split block. That said, I think they have a shot at the top 10, maybe the 8 to 10 range.

As usual the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Missouri is obviously not all that good, and LBSU is better than maybe expected. Lets not put the Beach in the Final Four yet.

I have to agree with babe. Crimes went 11 -11 entering the third game against Villanova ended 13-16. Hasalikova in her first collegiate game struggled, went the wrong way several times for the block, was hitting -.210 starting the 3rd game of the Mizzou match. She finally got in rythym. Against Nova she was much improved. Hasalikova will be great after an adjustment period. Crimes does come in early, She does go with the MB on the block and needs to recover to get outside for the block, she she can get there. Her hitting is phenominal. Vargas can not consistenly feed the ball. Either the set is too low, too high, too fast or too slow... it is rarely on spot with the MB's. When it is crimes can put it down, if she is too on time. Not a good combination when thinking top ten. Too young, too erratic. No way are they top 15. Mizzou looked much better VS Nova. Much more intensity, much better passing. Mizzou is better than they showed vs LBS. I look for them to remain in the top 20.

Ms.(?) beachbabe I agree, for the most part, with your comments, although I think you are giving Missouri far more credit than they deserve at this point. Even with their issues I am more optimistic about Long Beach's long term prospects. I like their size and athleticism. Given the state of the sport that seems to be a greater determining factor on success right now. As an example, consider the UW-UT match of Saturday. I think UW was the far more skilled team. In the end, though, I think they were "out athleted" by UT. I also like the LBSU coaching staff. Even with the problems of the last few years, Brian and company have a track recod of success and have shown they can develop players.

Care to amend your prediction? Brian doesn't look so "tickled or giddy" right now does he? Even if they are lucky enough to win this one against the powerful Ducks (who beat perennial power house Portland in 5 games), I'm not sure a top 10 ranking will ever be in the cards.
