What is really scary for Gopher fans is that St. Louis started 3 freshmen and played two more regularly. The three who started - including a setter - hit 28-11-59.

True. But Minnesota played without their primary passers. That, too, is impressive.

And it looks from the stats that the passing/defense may have been pretty good tonight, considering, since Hartmann set all but 4 assists. Great to see Tan get some game time at libero.

I thought Tan was pretty incredible. She and Behrens on SLU battled back and forth for a while in games 2 and 3. Jones is what was surprising. I didn't realize she hit that well during the match. Silent but deadly.
Roehrig was a huge block.
Gus, give Anne and the SLU team some credit, they came out fired up and played their hearts out. You guys were missing two starters, SLU was missing their big outside from Russia. Her problem wasn't the NCAA, it was the US Embassy in Moscow, they wouldn't give her an entry visa to come back to school. It took the Missouri congressional delegation to pull the trigger.

Somebody needs to get a bit more faith in the power of the Gopher. Sheesh!

I'm pretty sure that Mitch played Opp all night, and Kyla was left side. In fact... thinking about it... yes, she was. In game one, our serve receive was not that great. Rachel Hartmann (Rachel Hartmann) set most of the game from behind the 10' line. It's awfully hard to set your middles from there. The serve receive was much better in games 2-4. After game two, one of the SLU parents told me he thought SLU was doing pretty well, considering that MN had five seniors starting. I corrected his count. "Point Slooooo!" sounds dorky. Catholic girls must sweat an awful lot, because SLU was wiping their side of the court down any time MN won a point. They never had to wipe it down when they scored the point and had the big mo, but if we got the point, the court was wet, even if no player had hit the court, and the ball had hit out of bounds. I don't think MN had to dry off their side of the court more than 2-3 times the whole match. I hope that Sammi McCloud (SLU #10) is not injured. She did something to her knee in game 3, and was there was an injury timeout called while they decided what to do (SLU replaced her for the game). She came back in game 4, but about midway through, landed wrong while in the backcourt, and spent the rest of the rally either wincing in pain, or limping for the ball (followed by severe wincing). She limped to the side after SLU won the rally, and had both her knees and thighs iced down by the trainer for the rest of the game/match.

"The Golden Gophers were without the service of seniors Kelly Bowman (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Malama Peniata (Plymouth, Minn.) who will miss the St. Louis Tournament due to an NCAA rule violation. Peniata will miss six matches, which spans this week’s tournament and next week’s Nebraska Tournament. Bowman will miss three games, which will keep her out of the St. Louis Tournament. "
I guess that's as official as we can get. I'd still like to know what the bleep the NCAA's reasoning was here.

At least it was a win, from the Gopher perspective. Also, there seem to be some good signs from the stats. The set distribution was pretty equal, which indicates pretty decent passing and ball control. Great production from the middles, which was an issue last year. The 19-4 blocking advantage is also huge. Now, they just have to serve better.

...and see how it works against a much better team, like LSU.

By the way, they only had 5 service errors over the last 3 games. That's pretty good, considering they also had 4 aces.
But who knows? You had to be there to know how the serving was and few of us were, besides JT and parents. And phaedrus, it appears.

And, it would appear given the number UW players registered in the tourney, that they were punished for winning the tourney not for participating in the tourney. Unless they did not receive approval to play prior to the event. But, still, why 3 matches for one and 6 for the other? Weird.
