I watched a U of M/MSU game on TV once, and the Michigan student sections was yelling to one player that her sister (who was also on the team) was hotter than she was, while she was serving. I thought it was incredibly rude. It is one thing to yell things at players, but once you start bringing in family members and commenting on the appearance of a player, you are crossing the line, IMO.

Gimme a break....you're referring to the Bellwood sisters (Tracey and Marley). When Tracy would serve, the zone would yell "Marley's hotter", and vice versa when Marley served. They weren't yelling anything derogatory or insulting (ex. "you're ugly", etc.). Even the sisters would smile when they went back to serve. Student sections around the Big Ten, including Michigan's, are definitely not saints, but you're making a mountain out of a molehill with this example.

You might be making a mistake in assuming those are the sisters that he's referring to...

Hey Gorf, HARey, tgopher.....yappachooka said it was the MSU MATCH.
As far as I know, the Bellwoods were the only sisters to play for MSU these past few years.

Know what I hate? When I sit down in the bleachers and the fans start chanting "Gorf is hotter."
Of course, that poncho does make him sweat like a pig in a wool blanket -- and look like one, too!

That may be the case for that particular match, however, they aren't the only sisters on visiting teams that have been treated in the same manner and its unlikely that all of the sisters treated in that manner were smiliing about it.

This has never happened. You imagination is running wild again. I've never worn my poncho to a volleyball match. I wear when we go out for a drink / dinner after matches to protect myself from your "control issues".

They weren't all smiling. Although truthfully, I thought that dangling their shoes over the heads of opposing players going back to serve was worse.

Hey, I'm not saying that other players aren't offended by things yelled at them - I'm referring to a specific match and specific incident cited by yappachooka - Michigan vs. MSU. The MSU players expect to hear garbage when they go to Ann Arbor and the UM players expect it when they travel to East Lansing. It's called a rivalry. Yelling that one sister is hotter, then vice-versa when they're taking turns serving is pretty mild, and from what I observed, was taken by the Bellwoods in the spirit of the in-state rivalry. I do not condone negative personal insults thrown at any player from any student section at any gym.

Fans always ‘talk’ to the visiting team servers, so more or less it is considered as a part of the game. However if it really gets out of control (somebody mentioned shoes dangling above the head of the player) there is a proper way to have it solved – the player and her coach need to talk to the ref…I’ve seen a ref who emptied the whole section behind the back line of the visiting team before he let the game go.

I heard two years ago, Hebert almost pulled his team off the floor at Michigan because the fans were so rude with so many personal attacks toward players. It is not just Michigan State that gets that type of treatment.

I will say that is one of the best things about the Tark Sharks at Purdue. They support the team by being supportive toward the team, and tend to avoid the personal/anti-other team crap (shoot, they even quit doing the "IU Sucks" interlude during the hockey song (which they did regardless of who we were playing)). Probably their most "taunting" is their "You got served" cheer after an ace, which sounds somewhat directed the first time you hear it, but after a few aces ( ) you realize that is just their usual response to the event. Of course, I'm never sitting at that end when an opponent server is standing right in front of them, so I can't hear anything quieter (I don't think there is much of that, though) I am disappointed though that they don't do the "Who put that net there?" cheer more often. They used to do it every time the opponent had a net serve (this was many years ago), and it is actually one that opposing teams used to even find funny.
