Good news for Hawaii: She'll play three years at UH!!! www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060920/SPORTS16/609200335/1032Aneli Cubi-Otineru hopes to fulfill a verbal commitment to the University of Hawai'i that she made out of high school. She said "everything is looking good so far, I'm where I need to be" in terms of her receiving her associate degree, which is required to transfer to UH.
She chooses to look upon this experience in a positive light.
"I have three years to play (at UH) instead of two," she said.
But the other Hawai'i players aren't so fortunate.
"It was heartbreaking, very emotional," Aneli Cubi

In the article it didn't mention Pohai Nu`uhiwa as one of the Hawai`i girls at CSI...is she not there anymore?
But I also feel for these girls...they are getting punished for something that they didn't do, that they had no control over...it is really heart breaking to see these girls waist a year of college because of something there coach did.

Wonder if Aneli Cubi-Otineru is willing to be a walk-on at UH. There is a strong possibility of UH having four redshirts this year, Arnott, Mafua, Thomas, and Hittle. This will limit the number of available scholarships. With the smashing success of Asia Kaczor at USC, a team mate of Cubi-Otineru at College of Southern Idaho last year, some major colleges might tempt Cubi-Otineru with a scholarship.

I'm guessing that UH has an extra scholie left available in hopes of landing Klineman or some other landlubber. If Klineman were to come to UH, then Otineru would have no choice but to walk-on; therefore if Klineman doesn't commit to UH, Otineru could receive that scholie. Note: with Mason, Thurlby, and Kamanao gone, it'll free up three. Two of them have already been filled/reserved(Simmons, Kaaihue), which leaves one left. Hope I calculated right. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

would Ka`aihue be on scholarship or a walk-on...because if I'm not mistaken I heard liberos usually walk-on and earn their scholarship later in their career.

If Ka'aihue can challenge Lee and the others, Shoji should give her a scholarship. Hawaii should stop hoping and waiting that any of their walk-ons will turn out like Villaroman, Ilustre or Watanabe. They need to offer a really good one with scholarship. I'm tired of them recruiting just the big girls and just waiting for one of the local walk-ons (most are undersized OHs) to step up to the plate and be "libero" material. With the exception of Watanabe and maybe Lee, none of the local girls in the last five years have been star "libero" material.
I'm guessing Shoji already has plans for Cubi-Otineru. She can really give the OH depth a lift.

Aneli could actually figure into the mix as a libero. She is 5'9'' and while she is athletic I don't see her being able to reach the elite level as an outside hitter. She has great defensive and passing skills.
And not to knock on a player, but I never understood why people were so high on Ashley Watanabe, in comparison to other liberos nationally she was never even in the mix as one of the best.

Well, she was able to get the job done. She may not be among the best passers nationally, but defensively, she was great. Of course, she never had ridiculously high digging numbers because she was on a team where at least three other players were posting over 2.5 digs per game.

I think she won't reach an elite level but her game is similar to Pressey of Cal. She is undersized but has a smart set of shots. Ontineru has some great passing and defensive abilities, with a solid all around game. Her hitting is very good despite her height. The only downside is that she will be a blocking liability. She won't be the kill leader for Hawaii but will likely be a solid role player and a fairly good offensive threat.

Maybe she can provide offense from the backrow and stabilize the passing and defense like Heidi Ilustre in 1996 and 1999.

gstring, aren't you the kamana'o fan who blistered when some people said kamana'o should have sat out when she was injured? love how you take liberty in attacking players other than your favorite.
