Elise Duggins was jump serving during warm-ups. It had some good heat on it. Not like a Kim Willoughby or April Ross or Logan Tom heat, but good nonetheless.

I gotta say this...Sarah Mason is a stunner. She should model or act or just stand around looking beautiful. Skinny girl, in an Alicia Arnott kind of way. But not. Cayley Thurlby has to be the most muscular or muscularly toned girl on the team. Say, who was she talking to after the match? A trio of Asians. I tried to reach her but I fell off the upper section onto the hard court floor in a thud. They had to wheel me off in a stretcher. Did anyone see that? It was embarrassing. I actually really like Jayme Lee. She is a really cute player. Yes Sarah is definitely a pretty one. The first time seeing Elise on the court, I knew that had to be her. She really looks a lot like her sister.

During intros, they introduced the San Jose State player Kristal Tsukano (from Kamehameha of Honolulu, HI). Then, my eyes quickly darted over to the Hawaii side, to see if there was any hint of recognition among the girls who played high school ball in Hawaii. All I saw was Juliana Sanders muttering something or other to a teammate. I think Juliana was talking about Kristal. I can sense these things.

When I went back to my car (I parked on San Carlos Street), several cops were arresting this African-American dude on the sidewalk on 4th Street. Don't know why. See...this is why I don't go to San Jose at night.

Amber's alleged mother told me she was going to be there. She identified herself beforehand (I swore not to tell a living soul) and gave me clues as to what to look for at the gym. She even invited me over. I was game. I must've looked around for several minutes craning my neck and shouting "Amber's mom! Amber's mom!" But nothing. I couldn't spot the poor woman. My neck hurts.

In sum:
It was boring. Hawaii passed poorly but put up a big wall with mega blocks and even more touches. San Jose State couldn't terminate when it really mattered. They were trying to just get the ball over the net. Jamie Houston and Sarah Mason were picked on all night by the servers. Kanoe couldn't connect well with her hitters. Jamie terminated well on the left. Sarah, despite the poor passing, had monster kills and stuffs. Amber had a great homecoming -- she got the biggest woop-woops and hoots and I could tell from her flushed face that she was loving it and embarrassed by it at the same time. A complex web of emotions.

She was there along with the Gregory's folks. I was sitting next to both of them...Guess we were on opposite sides or something.

No. 15 Hawai`i Earns Sweep At San Jose State
Recap Date: 09/30/06 SAN JOSE, Calif. - The No. 15 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball (9-4, 3-0 WAC) swept the San Jose Spartans (9-7, 0-3) 30-20, 30-25 and 31-29 in front of a crowd of 1,081 at Spartan Gym Saturday, running their WAC winning streak to 110 matches.
Jamie Houston led the way for UH, hitting .316 with 20 kills and six digs. Sarah Mason hit .484 with 16 kills and 11 digs while Juliana Sanders had 10 kills, five digs and a .600 hitting percentage. Kanoe Kamana`o posted 51 assists, four blocks, six digs and three aces while Jayme Lee led all players with 14 digs.
A 9-2 UH run early in the first game put the Rainbow Wahine out in front 13-6. Hawai`i would get their lead to 20-11 and 25-14 before Sanders ended a long rally with a quick set kill to end game one 30-20.
San Jose State scored four-straight at the start of game two to hold their first lead of the night at 4-2. Hawai`i pulled back to a tie on three occasions, then went on a 5-1 run to go ahead 12-8, forcing a SJSU timeout. Kamana`o served UH on a five-point run to push the advantage to make it 20-13. The Rainbow Wahine lead got as high as 26-17 before the Spartans made their run. SJSU scored four-straight to force a Hawai`i timeout at 26-21, and got within four points at 29-25 before Houston put down a big kill to end the second game 30-25.
Game three was a game of runs. San Jose State used a big 8-1 run to go ahead 11-7 early, only to see a five-point UH run put the Rainbow Wahine ahead 13-12. The two teams continued to trade small runs with a four-point Hawai`i run putting them in control at 28-26. But an ace by Jessie Shull tied the score at 29-29, sending game three to extra points. Mason then took over, scoring the final two points on a couple kills, giving UH the 31-29 game three win.
The team will head back to the islands to start a stretch in which they will play seven matches in 11 days. It will start with a three-match homestand with Utah State (Oct. 6), Nevada (Oct. 8) and Boise State (Oct. 9).

Just got home from the match, and I have to say it was really cool to see so many Hawai'i fans. I think we out numbered the San Jose State fans 4 to 1. The Wahine played well, and seem to have most of their kinks worked out.
Looking forward to seeing more of Mason, Sanders, and Kaufman in the front row.
Way to go BOWS!

The Wahine played well, and seem to have most of their kinks worked out. Looking forward to seeing more of Mason, Sanders, and Kaufman in the front row. Way to go BOWS! I am not sure if I would say we played "well." I was expecting more from a top 15 team in the nation. However, I am more accustomed to the men's game where the speed and power and dominance of the game is more pronounced. I would call this a decent win, but absolutely not a well played game. I thought we should have won Game one by a score of 30-15 if not more. Game two we should have won by around the same score. Game 3, SJSU started to wake up a bit, and Hawaii didn't really elevate their level of the game. Hawaii was very predictable to me. The plays are go to Mason and Houston which is fine against WAC teams, but we need to diversify our offense a lot more. Add a few wrinkles to the game. Add some X-plays, hit some shoots to keep the other team on their toes and trying to figure out what we are going to do. However, as posters have mentioned in numerous other threads, the passing needs to be there. A lot of the balls were just popped up into the air not to the setter but to the middle of the court where it forces KK to just set whereever she can, which normally means to Houston or Mason. In average, it was a mediocre performance by the Bows. However, from talking to others at the game, this match was supposedly a vast improvement from the Fresno game. It makes me shiver to think of how poorly we really played last night and yet still dominated Fresno.

In the 3rd game, when Amber went up to block, I swear she got up so high, her toes were above the tape. Her toes?? She can't jump that high. It was her knees, Wolfgang, her knees!

So Hawaii's passing sucked, but they hit almost .400 for the game! Shoot ... San Jose State must've been weak sauce at the net tonight. Hawaii's hitters will just continue to overpower the other WAC teams. Realistically, this is a TALL Wahine team. 6'2 and 6'3 starters for the most part.
The weak passing doesn't play into the match in the WAC because the hitters can just hit over the block.
Oh well, as always the WAC is a good time for Hawaii to work on the little things, get things straightened out, and honestly --- bring up their stats. After three WAC games the Wahine hitting percentage was braught up like ... 40 points. LOL.
I really like how well the Wahine block has been though. For the past three seasons, the Wahine block has been VERY strong, especially this year.
The Wahine aren't 6'4 or 6'5 players, but they are good 6'2 blockers who are technically sound.
Kamana'o, Mason and Keefe are probably the strongest Wahine blockers on the outside ... since forever.
If there was ONE thing the Willoughby and Kahumoku years lacked, it was the blocking.
Nice to have it nowadays.

Amber Kaufman is awesome. She reminds me a lot of Victoria Prince and her athleticism and quickness. Amber Kaufman has the potential to be better though.
Sanders and Gregory are decent on the slide, but Kaufman just hits harder and faster. The slide is best fit for players like Kaufman. Fast, good foot speed and leaping ability. I really thing the upcoming years are going to be fun watching her become better.
I wonder though if she'll move to the outside? Oh well ... here's to the WAC Freshman of the Year. LOL.
BTW ...
Houston, Hittle, Arnott, Keefe, Otineru (?) Gregory, Sanders, Kaufman, Thomas, Simmons, Blood Lee, Woolford, Duggins, Kitaguchi, Ong, that other libero recruit.
Hawaii once again is gonna have a loud of players ... aya ...
